Mandy Moore Spoke Out About Her $0.81 For This Is Us, And Stated That Things Needed To Change In Hollywood

During the actors’ strike, Mandy Moore was among the stars to share her own story. Moore revealed her residual checks for This Is Us, which were literal cents. Moore received as little as $0.81 on her pay given the low incentives on streaming platforms.

Upon this realization, Moore revealed things had to change, especially given the future of aspiring actors.

“We’re in incredibly fortunate positions as working actors having been on shows that found tremendous success in one way or another … but many actors in our position for years before us were able to live off of residuals or at least pay their bills,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Moore did receive some push back given that the cast was given a $2 million bonus for season six and the final season. However, she still felt that the compensation wasn’t fair.

“I fully acknowledge the profoundly lucky and rarified position I’m in as an actor at this moment, one that I don’t take for granted and one I also don’t assume to be in forever.”

“Ours is a fickle industry and in my 20+ years of being a performer, my career has ebbed and flowed,” she revealed. “I’ve had very lean years where I couldn’t get a job and those are precisely the moments when in years past, actors could rely on residuals from their past work to help them get by. The world and business have changed and I’m hoping we can find a meaningful solution moving forward.”

Mandy Moore called moving on from This Is Us, “daunting.” Moore changed her career thanks to the show. As expected, she grew attached to the series behind the scenes.

“Clearly, nothing will ever hold the same place in my heart as [This Is Us],” she told the outlet. “And, quite frankly, nothing will probably mean the same thing to the world in the way that that job did.”

“I love working and I feel so incredibly lucky to have had the best job in the world for the last six years,” she continued. “I think every creative person is definitely afraid of not working and feels like their last job is their last job,” the actress added. “I have been reading stuff and thinking about what’s next, but it’s daunting.”

This Is Us Would Have Been Drastically Different Had These Actors Actually Been Cast

The cast of This Is Us was on track to be completely different before producers finally found who they were looking for.

Moore and the rest of the cast deserve proper compensation given the success of the series, especially from a viewership standpoint. At the moment, there are major names in Hollywood trying to change the system, and that includes Ben Affleck.

Ben Affleck Is Among The Actors In Hollywood Trying To Change The Current System Of Residuals

Ben Affleck was applauded for going against Hollywood, and seeking change with residuals. Prior to his projects with Amazon Prime, Air, Affleck wanted to compensate his actors with an artist equity clause, which ensures better residuals. Affleck’s goal is to improve the streaming world.

The actor revealed alongside Wired, “It came to mind, slowly, through my experience producing and directing movies and looking at how the resources were spent. Also recognizing that the evolution of streaming services was putting a cap on people’s abilities to benefit in the long term on an annuity basis.”

He continues, “One of my fondest memories is of discovering a $400 residual check in the mailbox when I was on the verge of bankruptcy—if you can call it that when you don’t own anything. If you’re an actor and you did a week on a TV show that was very successful, you would expect to be able to make some [annuity] money because of the success of the collective effort. Now, that’s not the case. So I constructed this model.”

Credit to Affleck for trying to improve the situation for future actors.
