Boy, 16, is arrested on suspicion of murder after woman, 22, was stabbed to death at flat in in south London on Christmas Eve

A teenage boy, 16, has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a young woman, 22, was stabbed to death at a flat in South London on Christmas Eve.

The teenager was held by cops after they were called to reports of a stabbing at a flat in Bermondsey, South London, just after 10pm on Sunday.

The woman, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services who provided first aid on arrival.

Police said the suspect, a 16-year-old boy who was known to the victim, was arrested a short time later and was today being quizzed by detectives.

Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, local policing commander for Southwark, said: ‘This is a tragic incident and my thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

‘We recognise this will also have an impact on the wider community and we will have additional patrols in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance.’

Emergency services rushed to the scene at Spenlow House in Jamaica Road, where flats sell for between £250-300,000.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended the scene, but the woman couldn’t be saved.

Detectives from the Met’s specialist crime command are leading the investigation.

DCI Brian Howie added: ‘Our investigation continues and a team of detectives are working at pace to establish what happened that resulted in a young woman losing her life.

‘My thoughts, and those of my team, are with her family and friends at this awful time.

‘One person has been arrested, however we still need to hear from anyone who was in the Spenlow House area between 7pm and 11pm on Christmas Eve and may have seen or heard anything suspicious.

‘I would urge anyone with any information that may be relevant to our investigation, no matter how insignificant it may have seemed at the time, to come forward immediately.’

A post-mortem examination will take place tomorrow.
