The Irish actress and singer, star of films such as Wild Rose and Beast, talks about growing up in County Kerry in a new podcast.

Asked what made her want to be on stage, the 34-year-old West End performer says: “It was Mum.

She wanted to be an opera singer when she was young, and she is so brilliant – a classical singer – but you know, things happen in your life.

“But in church you’d see all these old men come up and they’d be crying their eyes out because she sang with all of her heart.”

Chernobyl actress Jessie, one of five children – a boy and four girls – born to mother Marina and father Tim, describes her childhood in Killarney, as “mayhem, but with loads of love and sometimes terror”.

She explained: “My Dad used to own a guest house and we lived in the shed at the back. He is the cook in the family, and you know those double sinks? When we were babies we’d be sat in one half and he’d load ice into the sink. We’d be throwing it into the kitchen while he was cooking.”

“My Dad is an amazing cook, I guess quite an exotic cook in some ways.”

The Fargo star added: “It was kind of like Wonka’s – anything could happen.

“You’d be put into an ice sink or you ate a cow’s tongue or whatever.”

Jessie, who was coached by her mother, got her big break in 2008 on BBC talent show I’d Do Anything, in which she was runner-up to Jodie Prenger, beating fellow West End star Samantha Barks into third.

She is now one of the industry’s most sought-after actresses after her Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the 2021 film The Lost Daughter. She won an Olivier Award for Best Actress in 2022 for playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret.

But it was her early days at the guest house that sowed the seed for performing and the spotlight.

Speaking to the Table Manners podcast, she said: “We’d make the beds and, if there were American tourists, part of our job as kids was to serve the food, and then we’d all put Irish dancing dresses on and give them performances. We were the evening entertainment!”
