Lorraine Kelly admits she had to be ‘ruthless’ while taking on new project away from ITV

Lorraine Kelly has revealed that although some media personalities might hire ghostwriters to pen their books, she was determined that every last word would be her own. However, the presenter had to be disciplined to fit writing into her already jam-packed schedule, amid 4am starts to film her self-titled ITV show.

The 64-year-old presenter’s debut book, titled The Island Swimmer, is expected to hit shelves on February 15, and is set in the stunning landscapes of the Orkney islands – one of her favourite holiday destinations. However, there was no time for a break for Lorraine during the writing process behind the 368-page novel, as she even joked that her husband Steve Smith had “locked” her in a room to keep her focused.

“I had to be quite ruthless [as] obviously I still had to give my day job the attention it needs, and make sure I was doing my homework for it,” Lorraine explained in a new interview with this week’s Radio Times. “But then I would go off somewhere quiet with my trusty iPad, and try to get on with the book.

“My husband was a great help [as] he wouldn’t let me out till I’d done 2,000 words!” she joked, before clarifying: “No, just because he was quite happy to go off and do all the shopping and cooking.” The Glasgow-born TV host added that she has a natural affinity with the written word, after her parents taught her how to read and write when she was four.

“I always find it quite odd when I go to other people’s houses and the floors aren’t groaning under the weight of books,” she chuckled, explaining that her own home is packed with novels in comparison. The “voracious” reader, who has been writing her own stories behind the scenes for years, always knew she wanted to write her own book.

However, she was also aware that if she didn’t strictly set aside the time to do it, her dream project might “never happen”.

Every weekday morning, Lorraine rises before the sun, waking up by 4am to do preparation and research for her TV show, which airs at 9am.

She also took research for her novel very seriously, plunging into the cold waters of Orkney to give her the experience of what her character Evie felt while swimming in the sea.

Lorraine visits the Scottish island archipelago every year and doesn’t find the sometimes temperamental temperatures too bad.

In fact, she joked that in comparison to another recent trip to Antarctica, the waters were “balmy”, adding: “Swimming in the sea makes you feel alive!”

Meanwhile, The Masked Singer star promised that she’d drawn on her own experiences of meeting a wide variety of people on her ITV show to inspire the characters in The Island Swimmer.

Although she’s had what some would see as flirtatious banter with everyone from George Clooney to co-star Tyler West, Lorraine is adamant that she “was not flirting” with George.

She conceded that she found the Hollywood star “beautiful”, but added that he also has a great personality.
