Fans argue that Colbert isn’t comfortable with comedian guests. However, that theory was debunked during his interview alongside Ricky Gervais years ago. In the following, we’re going to take a look back at their chat, and how a religion debate turned into a memorable moment on The Late Show.

We’ll reveal what went down, and how the fans reacted to the memorable exchange.

Stephen Colbert And Ricky Gervais Had An Amicable Debate About Believing In God

Six years ago on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert’s chat with Ricky Gervais took a twist, as the two went head-to-head on the topic of religion. Gervais discussed why he believes in atheism and, despite Stephen Colbert seeing things differently, he was completely respectful of his guest, something fans appreciated during the chat.

Gervais made some compelling points about his beliefs, and why he should not be judged.

“Well, I am. No I am because atheism is only rejecting a claim that there is a God. Atheism isn’t a belief system. This is atheism in a nutshell. You say, “there is a God”. I saw, “can you prove that?” You say, “No.” I say, “I don’t believe you then.” So, ummm, you believe in one God I assume.”

“So basically, you believe, you deny one less God than I do. You don’t believe in 2,999 Gods and I don’t believe in just one more,” Gervais added.

Colbert also had a big appreciation for one of Gervais’ statements made about science, and how it impacts his take on religion.

“Well, but science is constantly proved all of the time. You see, if we take something like any fiction, any holy book, and any other fiction and destroyed it, in a thousand years time that wouldn’t come back just as it was. Whereas if we took every science book and every fact and destroyed them all, in a thousand years they’d all be back, because all the same tests would be the same result.”

Colbert responds, “That’s really good.”

Ricky Gervais Revealed He Gets Asked About His Religious Beliefs Often

Speaking alongside The Wall Street Journal, Gervais discussed “why I’m an atheist.” Once again, the comedian was well-spoken, breaking down his points.

“Why don’t you believe in God? I get that question all the time. I always try to give a sensitive, reasoned answer. This is usually awkward, time consuming and pointless. People who believe in God don’t need proof of his existence, and they certainly don’t want evidence to the contrary.”

Gervais continues, “Arrogance is another accusation. Which seems particularly unfair. Science seeks the truth. And it does not discriminate. For better or worse it finds things out. Science is humble. It knows what it knows and it knows what it doesn’t know. It bases its conclusions and beliefs on hard evidence – – evidence that is constantly updated and upgraded.”

The comedian definitely showed a different side of himself with the way he was able to articulate an answer to this sensitive topic.
