Dana Carvey thanks fans in wake of son Dex’s death from accidental drug overdose

Dana Carvey is thanking fans for their love and support following the unexpected death of his son Dex, who died Wednesday at the age of 32.

The “Saturday Night Live” alum shared a heartfelt message via Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter) on Saturday.

“This is just to say thank you,” Dana, 68, began, going on to express that he and his wife, Paula, “have been overwhelmed” by all of the love, personal stories and “compassion” they’ve received.

“We received so many beautiful messages from people who knew Dex,” he continued. “These touched us more than we could ever express in words.”

Dana went on to add that he will be taking a “break from work and social media” so that he, Paula and their younger son, Thomas, 30, can “try to figure out what life looks like now” as a family of three.

“We will heal the best we can and carry on. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way,” he ended the message. “Much love, Dana.”

Earlier this week, the comedian and his wife announced that Dex, an aspiring comedian, had died.

“Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy. Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old,” the statement began.

“Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things — music, art, film making, comedy — and pursued all of them passionately.”

The couple said their late son made people love life, but “most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend” Kaylee.

“Dex was a beautiful person,” the statement continued. “His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.”

TMZ later reported that first responders rushed to Dex’s house Wednesday evening after receiving a call from his girlfriend around 10 p.m. PT.

According to the outlet, Dex had locked himself in the bathroom and was unresponsive when authorities discovered him. Paramedics reportedly tried to revive him but were not successful.

In the wake of his unexpected passing, Dana has shared photos of Dex over the years.

“Dex and me working together. What a joy,” the “Wayne’s World” star wrote alongside one of the two of them laughing.

“We will heal the best we can and carry on,” his family shared in a statement.

He also shared another sweet photo of Dex writing, “F–k the tabloids. This is my boy.”

A slew of fellow comedians commented including Judd Apatow, Elon Gold and Jeffrey Ross.

“He is beautiful,” Dana’s former “SNL” co-star Cheri Oteri wrote. “I’m so sorry Dana I’m praying for strength for your family. Thank you for speaking out about addiction. Too many can relate to your heartbreak.”
