Mexico announce upcoming friendlies ahead of Copa America 2024

The Mexico national team is set to take on two South American giants leading up to Copa America 2024 next summer.

The 2023 Gold Winners, who’ve won two out of their last six, will compete in the upcoming Copa America for the first time since 2016 after qualifying through the CONCACAF Nations League.

El Tri begin preparations for the highly anticipated tournament with a June 5 clash against Uruguay. The last time to the sides met was June 2022, with Uruguay winning 3-0. It’s been an even contest in the last six games between the two nations, with both team winning three times.

Following their first friendly, Mexico doesn’t have much time to rest as they square off with one of the favorites of the tournament, Brazil, on June 8.

Brazil triumphed 2-0 over Mexico in their last meeting in the 2018 World Cup, as goals from Neymar and Roberto Firmino sealed passage to the quarterfinals. Brazil has a narrow lead in the two countries’ last eight meetings with a 4W-1D-3L record dating back to 2005.

While the venues for the two friendlies haven’t been announced, it’s assumed that they’ll take place in the United States, the host country for Copa America, as well as Mexico’s recent history with scheduling contests in the US.

Prior to the two tune-up friendlies, head coach Jaime ‘Jimmy’ Lozano will lead Mexico in their Nations League semifinal against Panama, who they overcame in the Gold Cup final, 1-0.

Mexico’s Group B Copa America campaign kicks-off on June 22 against Jamaica before a clash with Venezuela on June 26. Lozano’s side rounds out the group stage on June 30 vs Ecuador, hoping to seal qualification to the quarterfinals.
