Destiny Udogie close to agreeing new Tottenham contract

Tottenham Hotspur are finalising terms with Destiny Udogie over a new long-term contract, sources have confirmed to 90min.

Udogie has quickly won over the Spurs faithful this season and has been one of their key performers under new head coach Ange Postecoglou, exceeding in an inverted left-back role.

Sources close to Tottenham have told 90min that negotiations with Udogie regarding a new contract are ‘advanced’ and they are keen to reward him following his excellent start to the season. He scored his first goal for the club in Sunday’s 4-1 win at home to Newcastle United.

Udogie signed for Tottenham on a five-year deal during the 2022 summer transfer window but was loaned back to Udinese for the 2022/23 season. Spurs’ willingness to include such a clause in the deal helped them beat Brighton & Hove Albion to his signature, while he was one of the final signings made by former managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

Prior to the start of the 2023/24 campaign, question marks were raised over whether Udogie could play as an orthodox left-back having almost exclusively played as a wing-back during his career, but he has transitioned into this new role seamlessly.

Postecoglou has often asked Udogie to come infield and play almost as a number ten, while defensively he has held his own in matchups against the likes of Mohamed Salah and Bukayo Saka.

Udogie made his senior Italy debut in October in a Euro 2024 qualifier with Malta, assisting Davide Frattesi’s stoppage-time goal. He made his first start for the Azzurri away at England days later.
