Lorraine Kelly’s two-word response as ITV guest takes swipe at show absences on air

Lorraine Kelly shared the ITV studio with Iain Stirling this morning, only for him to crack a joke at her expense – and she seemed unimpressed. The star had appeared on her show multiple times before, but that didn’t stop him chuckling: “It’s nice to do Lorraine with Lorraine!”

The 64-year-old presenter has come into the spotlight before for her absences, which some believe are too frequent. “The SHADE of Iain Stirling! #Lorraine” one follower exclaimed on Twitter (X), adding a tears of laughter emoji.

Another viewer shot back jokingly: “She didn’t like it.” She might not have seemed amused when Iain put her on the spot, but she previously declared that a Twitter account set up to monitor the percentages of times she has failed to host her own show was “hilarious”.

Lorraine shed some light on her commitment to the programme she has hosted for almost 15 years on a BBC Radio Four show recently. Talking on Woman’s Hour, she explained that she’d been commuting between England and Scotland to care for her elderly and unwell mother.

“I am having to take quite a few Fridays off, because my mum’s really not well,” she explained. The Kelly matriarch lives in East Kilbride, whereas Lorraine, who was born in Scotland too, is based in Buckinghamshire to make it easier for her to get to the ITV studios.

She continued that, after 40 years of working five days a week, she felt the need to “take a wee bit of time off”.

The TV star revealed that although there’d have been a time in her past when she “cared” about the Twitter account, she now believed it was “absolutely fine”.

However, she warned: “To be honest… you should never comment on things like that if you don’t know what’s really going on in people’s lives.”

Last year, it was revealed that her mum Anne had been diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a condition affecting the kidneys.

It causes the body to pass out too much protein in the urine and can cause severe swelling – especially in the eyes, hands and feet – plus weight gain, loss of appetite and fatigue.

According to the NHS, the loss of protein from the bloodstream is an autoimmune issue, sparked by the immune system attacking the kidneys and causing damage.

However, when she was on screen today, Lorraine presented a full show, speaking to animal conservationist Jane Goodall as she celebrated her 90th birthday, and quizzing Emma Atkins on her Emmerdale PTSD storyline, playing Charity Dingle.

There was even a surprise blast from the past when she featured New Kids on the Block.
