Twitter Reacts as Viktor Axelsen wins men’s singles in World Tour Finals for the third time

Former Olympic Champion, Viktor Axelsen is at the pinnacle of the BWF’s calendar event for the fifth time in a row. Axelsen notched up a dominating win against home favourite Shi Yuqi in 49 minutes. Everyone had expected Shi to have a fantastic win in front of his home crowd. However, Viktor had other plans in mind as he notched up his hat-trick of the singles titles. Interestingly, this was Axelsen’s fifth title on the trot. The next important mission for Axelsen will be to defend his prized gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics in Paris.

What happened in the match?

Olympic badminton champion Viktor Axelsen and former triumphed on Sunday in their BWF World Tour Finals deciders in Hangzhou. The 29-year-old Dane dominated China’s Shi Yuqi in straight sets 21-11, 21-12 in a one-sided men’s final of the year-ending Badminton World Federation (BWF) event in China’s east. Denmark’s Olympic champion was simply too strong for 2018 winner Shi Yuqi. Interestingly, Axelsen chose to keep his post-match remarks in Chinese, “I’m extremely proud and extremely tired.” The Danish shuttler further added, “My year has been extraordinary. It has also been marked by big disappointments.” By ‘disappointments’ the Danish international was referring to the All England Open and the World Championships on home soil.

Nevertheless, Axelsen kept his perseverance in the game and finally found success this season. “But a great sportsman gets up and recovers from disappointing experiences. And that’s what I managed to do. I’ve won some big titles, so I can’t be disappointed with this year,” he said.
