First Indian Bowler to claim wicket on first ball of a World Cup match

For the first time in 48 years, Jasprit Bumrah made history for the Indian cricket team during the 2023 Cricket World Cup match against Sri Lanka. He accomplished a remarkable feat by becoming the first Indian bowler to take a wicket on the very first ball of a team’s innings in a Cricket World Cup match. This exceptional moment occurred when Jasprit Bumrah delivered a perfect ball that trapped Pathum Nissanka LBW. The delivery moved swiftly away from the batsman, striking him high on the pads. While the umpire initially ruled it out, a review by Sri Lanka confirmed that the ball was clipping the left stump’s bails. This accomplishment had never been achieved by an Indian bowler in the history of the Cricket World Cup.

During the match, Virat Kohli narrowly missed the opportunity to equal Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries, as he scored 88 runs off 94 balls. However, the Indian batsmen performed exceptionally well on a flat pitch, amassing a massive total of 357 for 8 against Sri Lanka. Kohli partnered with Shubman Gill for a 189-run second-wicket stand, and Gill, who scored 92 runs off a run-a-ball innings, displayed outstanding form.

Following a brief slump, Shreyas Iyer contributed significantly with his innings of 82 runs off 56 balls against a relatively weak bowling attack on the placid track. His innings featured six sixes and three fours, playing a crucial role in India surpassing the 350-run mark after the dismissals of Gill and Kohli in quick succession.

Dilshan Madushanka, who took 5 wickets for 80 runs in 10 overs, bowled a remarkable delivery to dismiss skipper Rohit Sharma early in the innings. He also prevented all three Indian batsmen from achieving well-deserved centuries by using slower cutters and bouncers effectively during his second and third spells.

Kohli and Gill navigated the initial challenging overs effectively and amassed a substantial number of runs, giving India a commanding position in the match. Dushmantha Chameera had an opportunity to dismiss Kohli in the sixth over but couldn’t hold onto a return catch during his follow-through.

Kohli, who began cautiously, looked poised to equal Tendulkar’s record of ODI centuries, but he was dismissed for 88 runs from 94 balls, including 11 fours. Gill, on the other hand, started slowly but soon displayed his fluent batting style and looked set to achieve his first century of the tournament. Unfortunately, his innings was cut short when he was caught behind, scoring 92 runs from just as many balls, featuring 11 fours and two sixes.
