Matthew Perry’s ex wants new investigation into death amid fears over ‘rogue’ nurse

Friends star Matthew Perry dies aged 54

Matthew Perry’s ex-girlfriend has called for a fresh investigation into the Friends star’s death, citing concerns over ‘rogue’ medical staff.

Kayti Edwards, who was also Perry’s former assistant, expressed her worries in an exclusive chat with The Mirror.

She revealed her fears stem from Perry’s past experiences with ‘unscrupulous’ healthcare workers providing him with drugs. Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing, passed away in October 2023.

An autopsy report stated he died due to the “acute effects” of ketamine. However, Edwards is urging police to revisit the case, believing there’s more to the story.

“It needs to be looked at again. I know when Matthew was taking 40 to 50 Vicodin in a day, he was getting it from a nurse who would bring it to his house,” she shared.

In the same interview, conducted just before the Academy Awards ceremony, Edwards made a heartfelt plea for Perry to be remembered at the Oscars – either in the prestigious In Memoriam segment or with a posthumous honour.

The actor, who sadly passed away at 54 in October, had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy for depression.

However, his last session was a week and a half before his death, and the ketamine only stays in your system for three to four hours.

This suggests he was getting his ketamine from somewhere else, but the LAPD has recently closed the investigation.

Kayti, 47, who was once in a relationship with the late actor in 2006 and remained friends with him until his passing, says: “It needs to be looked at again. I know when Matthew was taking 40 to 50 Vicodin in a day, he was getting it from a nurse who would bring it to his house. He had a way of enabling people to do things for him, saying ‘I’ll give you this amount of money if you keep your mouth shut and get me this.’”.

This comes after recent US claims that Matthew was aggressive with another ex-girlfriend and a former assistant while under the influence of drugs – allegations that all parties have so far declined to comment on.

Kayti admits she was persuaded into helping him get his drugs when they were dating in 2006, and later when she worked as his assistant, in 2011.

“He made it so hard to say no. He was like ‘Kayti, can you run down and pick up this envelope for me, I’ll give you $5,000.’ It was hard to say no to that. “That’s why I want people to investigate medical staff to see if he had a deal with any of them to give him some ketamine on the side. “”.

Kayti, who once served as Matthew’s assistant during his drug addiction period, has vivid recollections of his struggle. “Matthew wasn’t a casual partier and when he was in his addiction, it was very scary,” she recounts.

“He was just like a vacuum cleaner of anything you could get his hands on which is very dangerous. But with a person in active addiction, you can’t really tell them to stop or make them stop. You know, you can just kind of be there for them.”

As the granddaughter of British film star Julie Andrews, Kayti shared a past relationship with Matthew after being introduced by her grandpa, Blake Edwards, famed director of the original Pink Panther films.

Even after their breakup, they stayed friends and Matthew even bonded with Kayti’s new spouse Walter, who was also overcoming his addictions.

“Matthew kind of gravitated to him a bit as my husband was sober and in a programme,” Kayti recalls. “I think Matthew felt safe with us a little bit, and that we didn’t judge him.”

She describes the off-screen Matthew as a home-loving person with no fondness for fame.

“It wasn’t like I was hanging out with Matthew Perry, the actor, he was just average. He liked to stay home and watch movies. He likes to put on his Alexa and listen to music and cook,” she shares.

“And you know, he wanted to be at home a lot because he just wanted to be himself and not have to worry about going out which was a chore for him.”

Matthew, best known for his role as Chandler Bing in the popular series where he earned $1million (£780,000) per episode until 2004, has openly discussed his struggles with addiction.

In his recent memoir, he revealed that he spent a staggering $9 million (£7.1m) on his journey to sobriety, which included 15 visits to rehab.

Despite his fame from the show, Kayti often worried that Matthew lacked genuine friends who truly cared for him.

“It just makes me feel really sad that most of the people in his life wanted something from him…he never really had a solid, good group of friends that really just cared about him and not who he was,” she expressed.

Kayti last bumped into Matthew in Malibu when he was engaged to Molly Hurwitz. “I ran into him at this little juice bar called the Vitamin Barn in Malibu, and we sat down and chatted for ages,” she recalls.

“I actually didn’t really recognise him at first because he had gained a lot of weight, which was great as when you are sober, you gain a bunch of weight.”

Towards the last few months of his life, Kayti says she was worried by pictures of him looking dishevelled. “He’s normally very clean and well manicured. That’s how I knew him. He even had a full face wash routine. But then I started looking at pictures and it was clear that he had started declining, which I can guess was that he was probably battling, being sober and not being sober. He just didn’t care anymore, he just gave up.”

Kayti, who operates a horse rescue ranch in Yucca Valley, California, mentioned that despite his challenges, he was her loyal friend till the end.

His passing left her deeply upset. “He was also a really good friend to me, and really supportive when I started this horse rescue,” she shared.

“He just loved the animals, and was just very supportive of my life and my journey.”
