Sheffield Utd 0-8 Newcastle: Player ratings as Magpies thrash Blades in joint club-record Premier League win

Newcastle United recorded their joint-biggest win in Premier League history on Sunday, thumping a truly woeful Sheffield United side 8-0 at Bramall Lane.

Eight different goalscorers got in on the action for Newcastle in a brilliant day for the club and a bloody awful one for the Blades.

Hope the game unfolded

After a rather tepid start to the game, during which Harvey Barnes was subbed off with an injury, Newcastle took the lead in controversial circumstances on the 20th minute mark.

The goal came from Sean Longstaff, who swept home a cross from Barnes’ replacement Anthony Gordon, and the controversy was provided by Gordon in the lead up to crossing the ball. After controlling on the byline, the ball notably hit Gordon’s hand when it bobbled up off of the turf, allowing the wide player to then side-foot into Longstaff’s path.

Callum Wilson came within a whisker of doubling the lead shortly after, the striker just unable to get a telling touch on a brilliant set-piece delivery from Kieran Trippier.

On the half-hour mark, Dan Burn was able to get a telling connection on a Trippier set-piece to make it 2-0. The towering full-back muscled his way to the back post to head home the second goal of the game.

Sheffield United clearly didn’t learn their lesson from the two aforementioned set pieces from Trippier as, in the 35th minute, they conceded another in similar fashion. This time Trippier’s delivery into the box was met by Sven Botman, who brilliantly guided his headed effort into the far corner of the net.

Newcastle’s dominance continued in the second half, with Wilson being the next to get on the scoresheet. The striker nodded home yet another fantastic Trippier cross from the flank to make it 4-0 in the 55th minute.

Soon after it was 5-0 thanks to Gordon. The substitute drifted inside and whipped a delightful curling effort into the bottom right corner of the net.

Guess what happened after that? Yep, that’s right, Newcastle scored another.

And it would come from a sixth different goalscorer as Almiron race through the heart of a woeful Blades backline to latch onto a Bruno Guimaraes pass and fire home.

The goalscoring continued in the 75th minute when Newcastle bagged their seventh goal of the game. This time the goal came from Bruno Guimaraes, who latched onto a loose ball in the penalty area to slam into the roof of the net.

Before the full-time whistle could blow, Newcastle were able to equal their all-time Premier League record win and condemn Sheffield United to their worst ever home defeat. The final goal came from substitute Alexander Isak, who drifted past a defender before firing into the top corner.
