BBC star Kawser Quamer may have accidentally spoilt her niece’s surprise birthday party by announcing it live on BBC North West Tonight on Friday. The weather presenter had just finished her report when she was invited over to the sofa by host Annabel Tiffin for a quick chat.

Keen to know her plans after a busy week, Annabel asked: “So, what have you got [coming] up at the weekend? Anything exciting?” In response, Kawser seemingly forgot she was on air and said: “My niece’s surprise birthday party.”

Taken aback by her revelation, Annabel said that while the plan seemed “lovely”, she may have just ruined the surprise. Realising her blunder, Kawser swiftly urged viewers to keep it a secret as the pair struggled to contain their laughter.

Despite her wishes, the humorous moment has since gained a lot more attention on the platform X. One user commented: “Oh God,” while a second wrote: “Whoops!”

A third typed: “The moment of realisation that the chat between colleagues isn’t by the water cooler but live on BBC One is brilliant. But that’s what makes @BBCNWT so brilliant, feels like a family! Admittedly, a family where you shouldn’t tell @KawserQuamer about any surprise parties.”

“It gets funnier the more times you watch it,” a fourth wrote.

BBC News’ creative director Chris Cook added: “This is DELIGHTFUL – have a great weekend all xxxx,” while BBC South West journalist Alastair Monk added: “This is just brilliant. In a time of so much stress, just enjoy.”

Annabel also shared the viral clip on her page, adding: “Kawser’s reaction!” alongside a crying with laughter emoji.

Seemingly not wanting to bring anymore attention to her blunder however, Kawser is yet to address it from her account.

It’s not the first on-air mishap a BBC presenter has experienced in recent times.

Back in December, BBC News anchor Maryam Moshiri went viral after she was caught flashing her middle finger at the camera, not realising she was already live.

The presenter then swiftly switched into professional mode and began reading out the headlines, announcing: “Live from London, this is BBC news.”

She continued: “Britain’s former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson apologises for the pain and loss suffered in the UK during the first pandemic.”

After the clip grew popular, Maryam issued an apology and explained that she had been “joking around” with her team before the programme began.

She wrote on X: “Hey everyone, yesterday just before the top of the hour I was joking around a bit with the team in the gallery.

“I was pretending to count down as the director was counting me down from 10-0.. including the fingers to show the number. So from 10 fingers held up to one.

“When we got to 1 I turned finger around as a joke and did not realise that this would be caught on camera.

“It was a private joke with the team and I’m so sorry it went out on air! It was not my intention for this to happen and I’m sorry if I offended or upset anyone. I wasn’t ‘flipping the bird’ at viewers or even a person really.”

Maryam went on to say it was “a silly joke” which was meant for a small number of her colleagues.

The BBC later released the whole clip of the moment proving her words.
