Man Utd vs West Ham: Complete-head-to-head record

Manchester United and West Ham have met frequently over the years, with the two clubs almost exclusively participating in the top flight of English football.

Many thrilling contests have been battled out throughout history, with FA Cup and Carabao Cup clashes resulting in victories for both clubs. However, it’s the Red Devils who have the historic edge over the Hammers.

Some true legends of the game have scored goals in matches between Man Utd and West Ham, such as Wayne Rooney, George Best and Sir Geoff Hurst.

Here’s a look back at some of the most thrilling clashes between Man Utd and West Ham, as well as the full head-to-head record.

Many of the most goal-laden matches between these two sides came many years ago, with a spate of 1-0s characterising recent meetings. One of the best games was undoubtedly this 5-3 victory for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side at the Boleyn Ground.

West Ham twice took the lead in the first half but goals from David Beckham and Nicky Butt ensured it was 2-2 at half-time with everything to play for. The Red Devils came out swinging in the second half, however, as Paul Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put them in full control.

Jermain Defoe made the last ten minutes interesting but Beckham’s penalty secured a dramatic three points for Man Utd. That result kept them top but they would eventually slip to third after a poor finish to the campaign.

Man Utd put plenty of goals past West Ham again the following season, though this time at Old Trafford and without reply.

West Ham were really struggling when this game came around, with Phil Neville even managing to score for the hosts. He grabbed the fourth goal after a Ryan Giggs double and one from Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutch striker later added another before Solskjaer wrapped up the scoring with 20 minutes still to play. It was a dominant and enjoyable performance from Man Utd on their way to winning the Premier League by a five-point margin.

One of the defining features of Sir Alex’s various Manchester United teams were the dramatic comebacks. They had a knack for finding goals when they needed them most and could rarely be counted out at a moment of weakness. Each comeback made the next one more inevitable.

It has continued beyond Ferguson’s departure to a lesser extent, but this match against West Ham was another great example. Mark Noble had netted twice from the penalty spot in the first half at the Boleyn Ground and Man Utd looked set to drop points in the title race.

It was still 2-0 with 25 minutes to play but Wayne Rooney scored from a free-kick and all the gears started moving in sync for the visitors. The England legend would net two more goals in the next 15 minutes before Javier Hernandez clinched it with a fourth at the end of the game.

Man Utd would go on to win the title with a handsome margin over Chelsea.

All games in April involving teams fighting for the Premier League title have a special level of intrigue. With West Ham having a solid season and sitting tenth, many wondered whether this trip to London would prove tough for Man Utd and allow another side to make up ground in the title race.

They were right, as Ricardo Vaz Te headed West Ham in front after 16 minutes. Antonio Valencia equalised before the break but Mohamed Diame would put the hosts back in front. Robin van Persie found the equaliser Man Utd needed but the winner never came.

Despite this draw, the Red Devils managed to maintain their form on the whole and win the Premier League.

We’ve talked about Man Utd and their ability to come from behind, and while this match in 2015/16 showed that once again, it’s more memorable for the Hammers handing the Red Devils a taste of their own medicine.

Diafra Sakho opened the scoring early on but two goals from Anthony Martial in the second half helped Man Utd turn it around. It wouldn’t last, however, as headers from Michail Antonio and Winston Reid in the last 15 minutes ensured a home victory for West Ham and kept them ahead of Louis van Gaal’s side in the table.

Man Utd would eventually finish four points ahead of West Ham.
