4 players who should push for a deadline day transfer

The January transfer window is mere hours away from slamming shut, and there are still plenty of deals to be done.

This has been a significantly quieter transfer window than most, primarily due to Financial Fair Play restrictions stopping a lot of clubs from entering the market, but there are players that should still be badgering their agents and clubs for a transfer.

It is very clear when the opportunities have dried up for a player mid-season, and with an international tournament coming in the shape of Euro 2024, there is added pressure on some players to get minutes and start impressing.

Here are four players that we think must be waiting by the phone into the wee hours as they seek a move on deadline day.

A player who has been linked with a move in multiple different windows, Trevoh Chalobah needs to play football and it doesn’t look like it will happen at Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino.

The 24-year-old has been linked with almost every top-half club in Serie A, particularly Napoli and AC Milan who are known to need a defender. As well as that, West Ham and Nottingham Forest are said to be interested, and even Atletico Madrid are in the frame.

The interest is there and perhaps Chalobah needs to start banging on the door, otherwise his career is at risk of drifting.

It’s fair to say that Divock Origi has performed particularly well since leaving Liverpool. He arrived at AC Milan and failed to make any sort of notable impact, so they loaned him to Nottingham Forest to rebuild his value.

That has not worked, and Forest now seemingly want rid as well. The latest suggestion is that he will have his loan deal terminated before then signing for LAFC, but he and the many clubs involved face a race against time to make it happen.

Sergio GomezSergio Gomez

It is rare that a player is desperate to leave Manchester City and the coaching of Pep Guardiola, but Sergio Gomez ought to be. The Spaniard has a chance of making it into his nation’s Euro 2024 squad, but he needs to play more football if he’s going to guarantee his place.

Guardiola seems to prefer using a centre-back, Josko Gvardiol, at left-back so you would think that a loan move for half a season suits Gomez down to the ground, but Man City are unlikely to let him leave so late in the window. That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t try, though.

Reiss Nelson hasn’t started a Premier League game for Arsenal since the 2019/20 season. He is not on the same level as other attackers in the Arsenal squad and he could really benefit from a loan move, ideally one that becomes a permanent move should he settle in.

It seems that Mikel Arteta thinks the squad is too thin to lose anyone, but he is 24 years old now and needs to be playing regular football. That isn’t going to happen at Arsenal, and a lot of bottom-half Premier League teams should be giving Arsenal a call on deadline day.
