What Happened To Leonardo DiCaprio’s Infamous Posse After They Terrorized Saved By The Bell’s Elizabeth Berkley?

Highlights

  • Leonardo DiCaprio and his notorious ’90s posse found themselves in a $45 million lawsuit after an incident involving Elizabeth Berkley.
  • Berkley declined dinner with Leo and his friends, leading to a series of voicemails and confrontations.
  • Despite the lawsuit being ultimately dismissed, DiCaprio remains loyal to his old friends.

With the kind of access reserved only for Hollywood’s elite, a global fanbase, and a multi-million-dollar net worth to boot, Leonardo DiCaprio has never exactly needed to bend over backwards to make friends. Even back in the ’90s, when his career was still in its infancy, DiCaprio still managed to assemble around himself an adoring crew of aspiring actors and former child stars.

Notorious for their womanizing escapades, DiCaprio and his motley crew of ’90s bad boys embarked on countless shenanigans. However, none of the group’s audacious exploits are nearly as outrageous as the incident involving Saved By The Bell’s Elizabeth Berkley.

The infamous incident, which started out with Berkley declining a dinner invitation from Leo and his posse, quickly spiraled into an altercation between the posse and Berkley’s boyfriend, and ended with Leo and his crew being slapped with a $45 million lawsuit. So, what exactly happened to DiCaprio and his infamous posse afterward?

What Happened Between Leonardo DiCaprio’s Posse And Saved By The Bell’s Elizabeth Berkley?

When Saved By The Bell’s Elizabeth Berkley walked into the premiere of Leonardo DiCaprio’s 1998 film, The Man in the Iron Mask, she had no idea that her mere presence would ignite a series of incredulous events that would end with her then-boyfriend, Roger Wilson, filing a $45 million lawsuit against DiCaprio.

But as fate would have it, that’s exactly what happened. After apparently becoming besotted with the actress at the premiere, Leo and his friends, known then by the moniker ‘The Pussy Posse,’ sent over L.A publicist, Karen Tenzer to extend an invitation for dinner.

“[Tenzer] said, ‘Jay Ferguson and Leo are going crazy for you, and they want you to come to Elaine’s after this – without Roger,’” Berkely would later recall in an interview with New York Magazine.

Then dating fellow actor Roger Wilson, Berkley promptly declined the invitation. Unaccustomed to being turned down, Leo and his posse of Hollywood wild ones didn’t take the rejection lying down.

“The next morning on my voice mail there was a message from Jay, saying, ‘Hey, baby, Karen gave me your number, we’re going to dinner later, we want you to come,’” Berkley recounted to New York Magazine.

As the day unfolded, Berkley found herself being bombarded with a series of voicemails from Karen Tenzer, demanding to know why she hadn’t called Ferguson back. Bewildered and upset by the unexpected turn of events, Berkley decided to involve her boyfriend, who promptly placed a call to Ferguson.

“I said, ‘Look, Jay, I know you guys are having a great time and the town is your apple – but not this part of town,’” Wilson recounted to New York Magazine.

‘”I don’t know how this got started, but I’m just asking you please not to call my home again, and Elizabeth has asked please that you not call her again… . Okay?’”

According to Wilson, “there was a two-second pause” before Ferguson erupted with expletives and proudly declared, “we’ll call whoever we want and if you don’t f**kin’ like it, why don’t you come down here and tell us to our face?’”

After the phone call, Wilson promptly headed to Morgan’s Hotel, where Leo and his posse were having dinner. At the restaurant were DiCaprio, Ferguson, Tenzer, Julia Ormond, Byrne, and about eight other members of the posse. Upon arrival, Wilson demanded to know why his girlfriend was being bombarded with calls at odd hours of the night, which triggered yet another expletive-ridden confrontation with Ferguson.

“Jay Ferguson jumps up and says, ‘I’m the one who called you f***face, and it’s time for you and me to go outside,’” Wilson recounted to New York Magazine. After the tense confrontation, DiCaprio allegedly said to his posse, “Let’s go kick his a**,” upon which Ferguson, Wilson, Tenzer and some other unnamed members of the posse headed outside.

While Ferguson and Wilson were preparing to square off on the sidewalk, someone allegedly punched Wilson in the throat. According to Wilson, Leo’s posse immediately “went crazy, saying, ‘Oh, no, oh, no, this can’t happen!’ And they jumped on the [unidentified attacker] and threw him back in the hotel. They were protecting him. And I never saw the kid again.”

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Roger Wilson filed a lawsuit, accusing DiCaprio of inciting his friends to attack him. In the suit, Wilson alleged that the assault had effectively terminated his career as a rock frontman and demanded $15 million in compensatory damages and $30 million in punitive damages.

In the ensuing legal proceedings, Todd Healy, a longstanding member of DiCaprio’s posse, admitted to hitting Wilson in self-defense, after he reportedly saw him reaching for what could’ve been a concealed weapon.

Despite the admission, the lawsuit against DiCaprio was ultimately dismissed in September 2004. According to Today, the judge who dismissed the case reasoned that Healy hadn’t been within earshot when DiCaprio had allegedly instructed his posse to “kick [Wilson’s] a**,” and, therefore, couldn’t have been incited into attacking Wilson.

Decades on, DiCaprio’s band of bad boys is long past its heyday, with many of its pioneering members having been excommunicated from the group or lost touch with DiCaprio for various reasons. However, the Titanic star seems intent on holding onto the remnants, and makes a point of hanging out with them from time to time.

“I’ve got plenty of new friends through the years, too, but I’ve held on to some of them for 25 years now,” the Romeo & Juliet star shared with RollingStone in a 2016 interview. “There’s an inherent comfort level that can’t be duplicated and can’t be manufactured. You don’t have to do catch-up interviews — they’re up-to-date.”
