Taylor Swift’s Rolling Stone Interview Was Disastrous Because She Tried To Act “Real”

In May 2019, Taylor Swift appeared on The Graham Norton Show. During her appearance on one of the best talk shows of all time, Swift described the worst interview she’d ever had. As Swift explained to Norton, she got in two car accidents while driving Rolling Stone’s interviewer around.

When Rolling Stone was preparing to feature Swift on their cover in 2012, they sent a writer named Brian Hiatt to shadow her. As Swift explained to Norton, when she realized she was going to drive Hiatt around, she put a lot of pressure on herself to be “real”.

“So, of course, like, I was just like, “Be your best self today. Like, be like, if you’re gonna drive, you drive the best you’ve driven.’ And also, you’re like, ‘How do I be real and not like be pretending to be real.’ Like when I’m clearly like, ‘I know this is a journalist.’”

No matter what the reason for what happened next was, Swift would grow to regret driving Hiatt as she got in two accidents with him in the car.

According to what Swift told Norton, the first accident she got in while driving Hiatt around was her fault. However, Swift made it clear that she wasn’t the one who caused the second accident.

According to Hiatt, Swift was trying to figure out where to go when things went wrong. Unfortunately, Swift didn’t know how to use her SUV’s GPS so she was on her iPhone trying to get directions from Google Maps and Yelp.

As a part of Brian Hiatt’s cover profile of Taylor Swift, he described the second accident they were involved with her behind the wheel. Just like Swift, Hiatt writes that
the second accident wasn’t the pop star’s fault
. Hiatt describes a car speeding by them, veering into their lane, smacking into the side of Swift’s SUV, and driving off.

Hiatt reported that Swift eventually figured out from her phone that she was going in the wrong direction and tried to turn around with her device in hand. As she began the process of turning her car around, Swift drove into a parked car. Hiatt then went on to write out the series of freaked-out noises Swift made after backing into a parked car.

“Oh, my God. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD. OH, MY GOD.”

According to what Hiatt wrote about what happened next, however, it didn’t take long for Swift to feel relieved. In his article, Hiatt wrote that Swift quickly figured out the car she ran into belonged to her bass player, and she felt instant relief.

“It’s fine, it’s my bass player!”

To be clear, Hiatt wrote that Swift still felt bad for running into her bass player Amos Heller’s car. Hiatt quoted Swift apologizing to Amos and pledging to pay for the damage she caused.

“I’m gonna pay for it, I promise! I’m good for it! Oh, my God, Amos, I’m so sorry. I freaked out ’cause I went the wrong way and he was gonna think I’m a bad driver and then I backed into another car. This is the worst interview he’s ever had, already!”
