Chelsea’s position in Premier League table without Cole Palmer’s goals

Following Chelsea’s mass spending spree last summer in which the Blues broke the Premier League transfer record, one man has stood out among their new recruits.

Signed for an initial £40m from last season’s treble-winners Manchester City, Cole Palmer has adapted quickly to life at Stamford Bridge. Mauricio Pochettino may have admitted that acquiring the 21-year-old wasn’t actually his idea, but that hasn’t stopped the Argentine leaning heavily on him this term.

Palmer has been an integral part of Pochettino’s new-look Blues, stepping up with goals and assists in spite of his rather toothless teammates. The Englishman has settled more quickly than any of Chelsea’s other summer signings, but the west London club have arguably grown too reliant on his contributions.

So, where would Chelsea be without Cole Palmer’s goals?

In an impressive debut season with Chelsea so far, Palmer has proven he has an eye for goal. Since making the switch to the Blues, the two-cap England international has netted nine goals in the Premier League, albeit five have come from the penalty spot.

While not a mouth-watering total, it accounts for over a quarter of Chelsea’s 35 goals in the competition this season. If you take into consideration his four assists as well, he has been directly involved in 37.1% of his side’s Premier League strikes.

Unsurprisingly, he’s Chelsea’s top scorer in the league, netting two more than the club’s second most prolific attacker Nicolas Jackson and four more than fellow winger Raheem Sterling.

Palmer has scored some important goals for Chelsea in the Premier League this season, including significant penalties against some of the league’s top sides. Without his strikes, the Blues would be seven points worse off, the winger having produced game-defining goals in matches with Arsenal, Man City, Luton Town and Fulham.

That would see Chelsea’s points tally drop to 24, while west London rivals Fulham would also leapfrog them as they would have managed a point at Stamford Bridge in January. Without Palmer’s efforts, the Blues would currently be sat in 14th.

However, given how many of Palmer’s goals have been penalties this season, it’s highly unlikely that all five of his spot kicks would have been missed by one of his teammates in his absence, something worth considering,

Having said that, it still paints a picture as to just how integral Palmer has been to a misfiring Chelsea side this season, the youngster seemingly one of the few match-winners currently in Pochettino’s ranks.
