The 2022 World Cup already feels a very, very long time ago.
It was only a little over a year ago that Argentina were crowned world champions in Qatar at football’s major men’s international tournament, but, as is always the case, a lot has happened since then across the beautiful game.
However, now is your chance to relive the emotions of the last World Cup with the brand new documentary Captains of the World, which offers behind-the-scenes coverage of the tournament.
Here is how you can tune in to see Captains of the World.
The new documentary will offer unseen footage from behind the scenes of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, specifically following the captains of each of the 32 teams that participated in the tournament.
The show will provide the usual interviews, dressing room footage and player interactions that are typical of a sports documentary, with the likes of Harry Kane, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo all at the centre of the action.
The official description of the series reads: “From the locker room to the pitch, this docuseries offers exclusive access to all 32 teams as they fight for football glory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”
If you were hoping to see any sort of critical discourse surrounding the Qatar World Cup regarding the human rights record of the country, you will likely be disappointed.
Captains of the World will be available to watch on Netflix across the globe, fittingly, and will be officially released on Saturday 30 December 2023. There are six separate episodes to get stuck into, each around 45 minutes in length, all of which can be streamed upon the release of the docuseries.
The episodes roughly follow a chronological order throughout the tournament, climaxing with the final between France and Argentina in episode six.
The official trailer for Captains of the World has dropped and gives a flavour of the high-octane action we can expect from the docuseries, perhaps summed up by Ronaldo saying: “Pressure? Every player here feels pressure. Everybody wants to win.”
The trailer, which is a little over two minutes long, offers snippets of interviews with some of the biggest players in the game, giving us an idea of the drama and narratives that what we can expect from the show.
