Phil Foden reveals why Man City could win nothing this season

Phil Foden has warned that Manchester City are at risk of not winning any more trophies this season unless Kevin De Bruyne is fit and firing in the second half of the campaign.

Having limped out of City’s opening Premier League game of the season after only 23 minutes back in August, De Bruyne played his first match in five months over the weekend as Pep Guardiola’s team began their FA Cup defence with a 5-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

During De Bruyne’s long absence, City – already with the UEFA Super Cup in the trophy case for the season – have struggled by their usual standards in the Premier League title race. At one stage in November and December, they took only seven points from a run of six games.

It is why Foden is so adamant that the Belgian is of vital importance for the months ahead.

“Everyone was buzzing to have him back,” Foden explained, via ManCity.com. “If we’re going to win anything, we need him at it. He’s one of the best players in the world, no one can do what he does.

“You could see the stadium roaring when he came on [against Huddersfield] and it just shows how big and important he is for us. To have him back on the field, it gives us a lift as well. I am delighted for him to come back and hopefully he remains injury free because we need him.”

De Bruyne made 49 appearances during City’s treble-winning campaign, the most he has played in any season since the 2017/18 ‘Centurions’ year when he featured 52 times.

Not only are City looking to retain the Champions League this season and become the first English club to be crowned the best in Europe in back-to-back years since Nottingham Forest in 1979 and 1980, they are also aiming to make English football history. No side has ever won four league titles in a row, with City trying to go one better than the great Huddersfield, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United teams who managed three on the bounce in 135 years of league football.
