The longest home winning runs in Premier League history

Home form is one of the most important things in football and something that all coaches crave. If you can make teams fear coming to your stadium, your chances of victory grow massively.

Each home win breeds more confidence among the players and the fans, meaning the next victory just feels inevitable. Putting together a staggering sequence of triumphs on your own turf tends to be followed by a league title, but this is not always the case.

Here are the longest home winning runs in the history of the Premier League.

This winning home run from Tottenham came entirely during the 2016/17 Premier League season, which makes it surprising that they still were not able to win the league title.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were beaten to the title by Chelsea. After a stuttering but unbeaten start to the season, the winning home run began with a 3-2 victory over West Ham United.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United would all lose at White Hart Lane during the rest of the campaign, but the run ended with their first ‘home’ game of the 2017/18 season. Chelsea rocked up to Wembley and won 2-1 with an 88th-minute Marcos Alonso winner, but it was Tottenham that finished above their London rivals that year.

Newcastle’s 14-game winning run started at the end of the 1994/95 campaign, signing off with a sixth-placed finish and a 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace.

They remembered how they got that win, as the Magpies then claimed all three points from the next 13 home games. Leeds United, Liverpool and Arsenal were all beaten by this Newcastle team featuring the legendary figures of David Ginola, Peter Beardsley, Les Ferdinand and Tino Asprilla among others.

The run came to an end, predictably, when Manchester United arrived in the northeast. Eric Cantona scored the only goal of the game and Man Utd would beat Newcastle to the title by four points.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side has caught many fans off guard during the 2023/24 season. Tipped by many in the summer to be a force, their slightly slow start to the season meant the discourse swiftly moved to other matters.

Now, though, they are mixing it in the top four of the Premier League and that is largely down to their ridiculous home form.

Having beaten Crystal Palace 1-0 at home in March 2023, Villa finished the 2022/23 season by winning six straight home games against teams like Newcastle United, Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur.

That has carried into the 2023/24 season, with the first eight Premier League teams to have arrived at Villa Park tasting defeat. The headline win was the 1-0 triumph over Manchester City in early December 2023, which was followed a victory by the same scoreline against Arsenal days later.

Pep Guardiola’s repeated criticism of Manchester City’s home support coincided with the club’s triumphant sequence in 2023. The Etihad Stadium may never have reached the decibel levels that Guardiola demanded but his players certainly lived up to his lofty standards.

City were not only imperious on home soil in the Premier League; Guardiola’s side racked up 23 consecutive victories at the Etihad across all competitions to begin 2023 – one match short of Sunderland’s English record set in 1892.

After the 1-1 draw with Liverpool which ended City’s streak, Guardiola blamed the early kick-off time: “It’s 12.30, we were still in the sheets, sleeping.”

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United had plenty of victorious sequences but the longest winning run at Old Trafford began with a 2-0 home triumph over Tottenham in the autumn of 2010.

19 more wins would follow with Arsenal (twice), Manchester City, Chelsea (twice), Everton, and Tottenham again all losing at Old Trafford.

It was a great spell at home for Man Utd but it couldn’t have ended in a worse way. Everyone remembers Man City’s incredible 6-1 win over the Red Devils, but it can be forgotten that it stopped the home side from reaching 20 Old Trafford wins in a row.

Just to rub salt in the wounds, the noisy neighbours would reach that very landmark just a few months later.

Surprisingly, Man City haven’t got a more up-to-date record from their time under Pep Guardiola. It was between 2011 and 2012 that they managed to stitch together 20 home Premier League wins in a row.

It all started in the backend of the 2010/11 season with a simple 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic with Roberto Mancini in charge. David Silva grabbed the goal. Man City would end the season in third place with five consecutive home wins.

They carried that form into the 2011/12 season and kept relentlessly winning games until Sunderland came to the Etihad at the end of March. The Black Cats managed to get a dramatic 3-3 draw, although it could have been a loss for Man City had Aleksandar Kolarov not scored in the 86th minute.

Despite this game, which was preceded by a draw away at Stoke and compounded by a subsequent loss away at Arsenal, Mancini’s side won their first-ever Premier League title at the expense of Man Utd.

The longest-ever winning run at home in the Premier League belongs to Liverpool, in the most frightening iteration of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

This run began during the 2018/19 season in which Liverpool finished just one point behind Man City. A 3-0 win over Bournemouth in which Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah scored became the first of many.

From that moment on, Liverpool did not lose a game until the following February, but that was away from home. The winning run at home featured victories over Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and basically everyone else.

The backend of this winning home run was during the COVID-19 pandemic, which meant it ended in an empty Anfield as Burnley managed to get a 1-1 draw, with Jay Rodriguez getting the equaliser in the 69th minute.
