Jude Bellingham reacts to Diego Maradona comparisons after breathtaking solo goal

Jude Bellingham has brushed off comparisons between his solo effort in Real Madrid’s win over SSC Napoli and Diego Maradona’s famous World Cup goal.

The 20-year-old has been the best footballer in Europe since making a blockbuster £88m move from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid in the summer, scoring eight goals and bagging three assists to date.

Arguably his greatest goal contribution to date as a Madrid player came in Tuesday’s entertaining 3-2 win over Napoli in the Champions League. After picking the ball up just inside Napoli’s half, Bellingham raced his way into the penalty area before flicking the ball over the outstretched foot of Leo Ostigard and side-footing into the back of the net.

The manner in which the goal was scored, and the fact that it was scored at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, has led to comparisons being made between the goal and the legendary one Maradona scored against England.

Speaking after the game to Movistar, Bellingham was asked if his goal was as good as the one the legendary Argentine number ten scored against England, but the level-headed midfielder said: “That’s a bit too much!

“It was a nice goal. From what I’ve seen on YouTube and documentaries, his [Maradona’s] quality was a bit more than mine, or a lot more. I’m just trying to contribute in a Jude way.

“It could be one of my best goals, we were against a great team in a great stadium. I’m happy to have scored it, it’s three points and it’s important to continue with this pace.”

Madrid and Bellingham are back in domestic action this weekend when they welcome Osasuna to the newly-refurbished Santiago Bernabeu. The England international will be looking to add to his already impressive tally of six La Liga goals in what is expected to be a routine win for the early season table-toppers.
