Abiy Ahmed Ali, better known as Abiy Ahmed, was born on August 15, 1976 in Beshasha, Kaffa Province, Ethiopia. He is 46 years old and of Ethiopian nationality, according to his birth date.

He is a Pentecostal Christian (a Protestant Charismatic Christian).He is also the son of Ahmed Ali, the father, and Tezeta Wolde, the mother. Tezeta Wolde, his late mother, was an Oromo Christian, and Ahmed Ali, his late father, was an Oromo Muslim.

He is the 13th child of his father and the sixth and youngest child of his mother, the fourth of his father’s four spouses. As a youngster, he was given the name Abiyot, which means “Revolution.”

Abiy Ahmed was a member of the Oromo Democratic Party (ODP) who participated in the uprising against Mengistu Haile Mariam’s dictatorship before receiving official military training from the Assefa Brigade and was assigned to the communications and intelligence department in West Wollega.

From 1993 to 1995, he served in the Ethiopian Defense Forces before joining the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Rwanda. He co-founded INSA, Ethiopia’s Information Network Security Agency, in 2008, and served in a variety of roles, including acting director for two years. He remained a member of the Defense Forces.

He left the military in 2010 to pursue a political career. He began as a member of the ODP and rose through the ranks to become a member of Ethiopia’s ruling coalition, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).

Soon after becoming a Member of Parliament (MP) in 2010, he was tasked with founding the ‘Religious Forum for Peace.’ The meeting was crucial in reestablishing amicable relations between Christians and Muslims.

In 2014, he was named Director General of STIC (Science and Technology Information Centre), and the following year, he was re-elected MP from his home district of Gomma.His fight against violent land grabs propelled him to the forefront, establishing him as a courageous and resolute leader.

In October 2015, he was appointed Minister of Science and Technology. And held numerous high-level positions before succeeding Hailemariam Desalegn as Chairman of the EPRDF. He was elected Prime Minister of Ethiopia on April 2, 2018.

After serving as Ethiopia’s Prime Minister,

One of his first acts as Prime Minister of Ethiopia was to free about 7600 prisoners, including opposition party Ginbot 7 leader Andargachew Tsege. Furthermore, by changing the country’s anti-terrorism legislation, he made it possible for exiled dissidents to return home.

On June 4, 2018, Parliament supported his proposal to extend the state of emergency for another four months, citing the country’s improved domestic circumstances. He recommended establishing an Ethiopian stock exchange. And opening formerly state-owned firms to private partnerships in order to boost the country’s economy.

He began replacing corrupt officials at the highest levels. Prompting a grenade attack on him on June 23, 2018, which he narrowly averted. Although he declared the end of Ethiopia and Eritrea’s 20-year war on 9 July 2018, reopening the two countries’ borders on 11 September 2018.

He has spent a significant amount of time working to promote peace to neighboring nations such as Djibouti, Somalia, and Sudan. In October 2018. He reshuffled the cabinet ministry to include 50% women and reduced the cabinet from 28 to 20 ministers.

In 2019, he founded his own political party, the Prosperity Party. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Abiy chose to postpone the scheduled parliamentary elections in June 2020 in consultation with the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE). This action provoked criticism, particularly from the opposition, and raised questions about the delay’s legality.

Abiy Ahmed was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for his efforts to end the 20-year post-war territorial impasse between Ethiopia and Eritrea. His accolades and recognition include the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa: Grand Master.  Order of the Zayed Medal, High-Rank Peace Award, Order of King Abdulaziz. African of the Year, 100 Most Influential People 2018, 100 Global Thinkers of 2019, and African Excellence Award for Gender.
