Prince Harry’s explosive memoir Spare made a ‘villain’ of his brother Prince William, royal experts tell PALACE CONFIDENTIAL in a review of 2023 for the British monarchy

Prince Harry portrayed his older brother a ‘villain’ in his memoir Spare, Rebecca English has told Palace Confidential.

Speaking on the Mail+’s weekly talk show, the Daily Mail’s royal editor said the Duke of Sussex, 39, surprised audiences by depicting the Prince of Wales, 41, as a villainous figure in the story.

‘We thought it might be the King and the Queen who were the villains of the piece, but it actually turned out to be his older brother,’ Rebecca said.

In conversation with the Daily Mail’s Diary Editor Richard Eden and show host Jo Elvin, Rebecca made a link between William’s villainous depiction and Harry’s detailing of an explosive brotherly argument detailed in the book.

Harry claimed he was left with visible ‘scrapes and bruises’ after allegedly being attacked by his brother. He claimed: ‘[William] grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor.’

The father-of-three’s highly anticipated memoir reached bookshelves across the globe in January this year, and it became the biggest selling memoir ever for its first week of publication, according to publishers Transworld, the UK division of Penguin Random House.

From colourful disclosure about Harry’s frost-bitten penis to more serious subjects of a brotherly rift and intricate details of a private argument between Kate Middleton, 41, and Meghan Markle, 42, the book raised eyebrows across the globe.

For Rebecca, it was information about a specific argument between William and Harry that painted the Prince of Wales as a ‘villain’.

‘They did everything together, so to see that explode once and for all so nastily was actually really sad to see,’ Rebecca said.

She added that the explosive details in Spare have resulted in William’s radio silence towards Harry – a reality unlikely to change any time soon, according to the royal editor.

It also contained an allegation that William and their father Charles confronted him after Prince Philip’s funeral ‘looking for a fight’.

Harry also alleged that William and Kate urged him to wear his infamous Nazi fancy dress outfit.

In addition, the Duke revealed his father’s medical ailments and the fact the King still carries around his favourite teddy bear.

He cast William as his ‘arch-nemesis’, Queen Camilla as a ‘wicked stepmother’ and Charles as an emotionally-stunted and ineffectual ‘old man’.

Elsewhere on the show, the panel discussed the effects Omid Scobie’s bombshell book Endgame.

On the topic, Rebecca said: ‘It’s raised uncomfortable situations again for the family, I include Harry and Meghan in that, that they were hopeful in trying to bury.’

She added: ‘The issue of trust has come up again because people have spoken to Omid Scobie, and I can tell you now that it’s not people at Buckingham palace.’

Endgame, a follow-up to Scobie’s 2020 book Finding Freedom, dropped to 215th on the Amazon bestseller list after just a week on the shelves.

It was widely pilloried even by normally sympathetic media outlets such as the New York Times, which described one chapter as ‘like a press release cooked up by ChatGPT’.

Most of the reaction to the book has focused on its Dutch language edition, which included the names of the two family members accused by the Duchess of Sussex of ‘unconscious bias’.

The book claimed Meghan had named the King as well as daughter-in-law Kate in letters she wrote to him on the issue.

Yet even this controversy has done little to boost its success, with Nielsen putting British sales figures for the first five days at 6,448.
