Louis Walsh has spoken out about the worrying health emergency he suffered during his three-week stay in the Celebrity Big Brother house. The 71-year-old, who finished in fourth place, revealed he had two panic attacks in the early hours of the morning and had to be treated by medics.

Louis told The Sun: “I’d wake at three or four in the morning and just lie there in the dark, worrying about things. Worrying about my mother, my health, what I had said that day – for the first time ever, I suffered from anxiety.”

Louis explained that he was given prescription sleeping pills but would wake up once they wore off “panicking”.

He continued: “The nighttimes scared me. But there are medics on-call 24/7, and they were brilliant. They spoke to me and calmed me down after I started having a panic attack and they really helped.

“I’ve never had therapy before, not even when I was diagnosed with the cancer, but for the first time ever I spoke to psychotherapists when I was in that house.”

The former X Factor judge says that while it was “surreal” speaking to psychotherapists “through an earpiece”, the therapy “really helped”.

In last Friday’s instalment of CBB, Louis revealed that he secretly battled Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia – a rare type of blood cancer – during lockdown.

He told his housemates: “I was sick, and I think nobody knew I was sick. I had cancer. A mild version, a rare one. In my blood, I didn’t even know that I had it until I went to the hospital, and then they checked me.”

Thankfully, doctors were able to “clear up” the cancer, but the illness has had a lasting impact on Louis’s mental health.

He added, pointing to his head: “It’s just up here, even when I go past a hospital I almost get sick.”

Louis left the Celebrity Big Brother house on Friday in fourth place, telling hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best: “I am so glad to be out”.

He said in his exit interview: “We had a brilliant time, but it’s scary – the best show in town. I nearly wanted to go a few times, it really is tough at night times, the three boys behind are all great.”

Reality star David Potts was crowned the winner, beating Strictly Come Dancing professional Nikita Kuzmin, Coronation Street actor Colson Smith and TV presenter Fern Britton.
