Olivia Colman, the award-winning star of TV shows Broadchurch and Peep Show, has shared that she was “sleeping on people’s sofas” and struggled to pay for a bus fare before she became famous.

The 50-year-old actress, originally born as Sarah Colman, spoke to Radio Times alongside Jessie Buckley to promote their new black comedy film: Wicked Little Letters.

Olivia originally grew up in Norwich before she swapped life for London, but confessed that the first years were “really hard” for her. She said: “London is a lot easier once you’ve been paid a bit! The first years were really hard.

“I was going around sleeping on people’s sofas, trying to find money for the bus to go and get a job. But you find your tribe and then it’s a magical place.”

The award-winning actress got her breakthrough in 2003 when she appeared in the Channel 4 sitcom, Peep Show. Comedy duo Robert Webb and David Mitchell offered her an audition after meeting her at Cambridge University’s drama club.

She experienced widespread success in Peep Show, which led her to appear in a series of comedy vehicles such as Hot Fuzz, The Office and Green Wig.

In 2013, Colman appealed to a brand new audience when she landed the role of DS Ellie Miller in Broadchurch. This significantly raised her profile and earned her a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress.

Her accomplishments didn’t stop there, as she also appeared in highly-acclaimed shows such as Fleabag and The Night Manager. In 2016, she won her first Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.

However, her success only grew stronger and in 2019 she recieved Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG nominations for her role as Stuart monarch Queen Anne in the film, The Favourite.

She ended up scooping all but the SAG Award for Best Actress. After winning the Oscar for Best Actress, Colman tried to compose herself during her acceptance speech in Los Angeles. She cried: “It’s genuinely quite stressful. This is hilarious. Got an Oscar!”

Recently, Olivia reprised her role as Queen Elizabeth II in an emotional finale during the final episode of Netflix drama, The Crown. She made an extended cameo in the 10th episode of season six, which sees her play the monarch during an imaginary conversation.
