Alejandro Garnacho warned over copying Cristiano Ronaldo celebrations

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has been jokingly warned by international teammate Angel Di Maria not to celebrate goals like Cristiano Ronaldo.

Garnacho, who has been capped three times by Argentina at senior level, has become increasingly important to United this season and has already made as many Premier League appearances (19) in little over half the campaign as he did in the whole of a breakout 2022/23.

The 19-year-old has an eye for the spectacular, like his incredible overhead kick against Everton in November, but is known to sometimes celebrate goals by mimicking Ronaldo’s famous ‘Siu’ jump, as well as the lesser seen hands clasped, sleeping gesture.

Yet if he is going to copy anyone, Di Maria has called on Garnacho for it to be Lionel Messi instead.

“The only thing I wouldn’t do is celebrate Cristiano [laughs]. I would score the goal and I would do like Messi does. I’ll stick with that,” the Benfica veteran, who has played with both multi-Ballon d’Or winning superstars for years, told media in Argentina when asked what advice he would pass on.

Being an Argentina international, the calls for Garnacho to side with Messi in world football’s never-ending debate are obvious. But the young talent doesn’t directly hail from the South American nation. He is Spanish-born, qualifying to represent Argentina through his mother, and instead grew up in Madrid at a time when Ronaldo was playing in the capital at the absolute peak of his powers

An impressionable youngster with dreams of one day becoming a superstar footballer himself, Garnacho had just turned five years of age when Ronaldo was unveiled at the Bernabeu in early July 2009 and then witnessed a transformation intoa global sporting icon on his doorstep.

When Ronaldo sensationally rejoined United in 2021, Garnacho – then a promising prospect at the top of the academy, got the chance to become his teammate before ever playing with Messi.
