Yellowstone Club

In the early 1990s, he shifted his focus to real estate development and began acquiring properties in Montana. The Yellowstone Club quickly gained attention as a destination for the wealthy and famous, with notable members including Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. Additionally, Blixseth’s development attracted investors and buyers who were drawn to the club’s luxurious amenities and its unique location near Yellowstone National Park.

However, the Yellowstone Club faced financial troubles in the late 2000s. Blixseth and his then-wife, Edra Blixseth, borrowed heavily against the club’s assets, leading to financial difficulties and legal disputes. Moreover, the couple divorced in 2008, and the Yellowstone Club filed for bankruptcy in 2008 as well.

Bankruptcy and legal issues

Following the bankruptcy, he faced legal battles and allegations of mismanagement and fraud. He was involved in lawsuits related to the handling of club funds and was ordered to pay significant settlements and judgments.

He sued one of his personal attorneys in June 2011 for legal malpractice and personal injury related to the Yellowstone Club’s bankruptcy. Moreover, he sought $375 million in damages, claiming that his former personal attorney Stephen Brown conspired to “plot against” him in bankruptcy proceedings in which it was discovered that Blixseth had looted the club before passing it debt-ridden to his wife Edra Blixseth as part of their divorce.

Brown denied the allegations. U.S. District Judge Donald W. Molloy dismissed Blixseth’s claims in March 2012. The federal bankruptcy judge overseeing the case ruled in July 2011 that Blixseth’s conspiracy and fraud allegations in the Yellowstone Club bankruptcy were previously addressed and found without merit. He then sued Credit Suisse and their appraisal company, alleging that they deceived and misled him into accepting $300 million in loan payments, resulting in the resort’s bankruptcy.

Granted bail appeal

Creditors are seeking an additional $286 million in alleged misappropriated funds from the Yellowstone Club, which trustees claim Blixseth stole prior to the club’s bankruptcy. Blixseth is still fighting these claims and is attempting to have the various judgments against him overturned.

He was jailed for civil contempt in December 2014 and again in April 2015 for failing to pay court-ordered sanctions and failing to disclose what happened to assets ordered held to pay his creditors. He was granted bail pending appeal and released in July 2016.

Songwriting

Apart from his involvement with the Yellowstone Club, Blixseth has been involved in various other business ventures, including real estate development projects in Mexico and other parts of the United States. Besides business, he is also known as a songwriter. He and his ex-wife Edra has written a charity single named “Heart of America.”

Meanwhile, the song became the anthem for the Today TV show’s “Make a Difference” campaign to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims in 2005. Wynonna Judd, Michael McDonald, and Eric Benet recorded the song. Ebony magazine reported in June 2006 that the song had raised $41 million with a projected revenue of $100 million. The Desert Sun reported in August 2006 that the song had raised $127 million for hurricane relief charities.
