John Cena Discussed The Lengths He’s Willing To Go To Make It In Hollywood

Highlights

  • John Cena has proven that he’s been game to play some extreme characters and this has paved the way for his acting success.
  • John Cena’s marketing gimmick with an OnlyFans account for his character got fans excited.
  • Wrestlers like John Cena, The Rock, and Bautista transitioned to acting and achieved A-lister status.

While he doesn’t keep a full-time schedule anymore, John Cena is still one of the biggest wrestlers in the world. His first match in the WWE came in 2002, and since then, he has won several titles and has been the headliner at multiple Wrestlemania events.

These days, Cena doubles as an actor and a wrestler. His career in Hollywood has become almost as successful as he has been in the squared circle. Cena stars in the HBO show Peacemaker, based on his character from DC’s Suicide Squad, and he will star in the upcoming film Ricky Stanicky, directed by comedy legend Peter Farrelly.

On February 21st 2024, Cena appeared on The Howard Stern Show to promote his new movie. During the chat, Cena discussed how his willingness to do nearly anything in Hollywood required of him to push his career forward.

While speaking about his latest spate of acting success, Cena told Stern about the early days of his acting career. According to the wrestler, Hollywood had given up on him after he starred in some poorly performing WWE-produced films like The Marine and 12 Rounds.

Cena hadn’t given up on acting, though, and he auditioned and landed a role in Amy Schumer’s film Trainwreck, playing what he described as a “weird, awkward naked guy.” Despite his poor experience in movies, Cena told Stern that he wanted to throw himself into the role, noting that his body wouldn’t allow him to wrestle forever.

The actor explained that he surprised Schumer and director Judd Apatow by being so comfortable appearing nude for a love scene with the actress. Cena remarked of feeling OK in his own skin, “The more comfortable you can be with it, the more you lose yourself in the thing.”Trainwreck would go on to be a big hit movie, and Cena’s career was back on track.

Hollywood realized that Cena was a game for all kinds of roles, and he did everything from appearing in an animated movie like Ferdinand to a blockbuster like F9. The 2018 film Blockers also showed Cena’s willingness to play a ridiculous character.

His breakout role came in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, where he played Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. The wrestler’s ability to play such a ridiculous role in such a straightforward way led HBO to create a show based on the character. Cena also had cameos in two more 2023 hits, Barbie and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

Cena Created An OnlyFans Account This Week

The online platform OnlyFans allows content producers to charge to see racy pictures and videos. Plenty of creators are making an awful lot of money on the site, and that includes well-known people and celebrities. Still, fans were surprised to see Cena’s name associated with the website.

Cena posted a tweet this week that directed followers to an OnlyFans page, promising they could see him “like you’ve never seen me before.” When fans did click on the link, though, they were taken to a page for Ricky Stanicky, the wrestler’s character from a movie of the same name debuting on March 7th on Amazon Prime. The page reads:

“You’ve found the verified OnlyFans account for Ricky Stanicky—renowned impersonator, philanthropist, investment banker, socialite, cancer survivor, and method actor. Subscribe to get spicy pics and vids!”

Luckily for fans of Cena and Stanicky, they don’t have to shell out big bucks to subscribe to the page, as it is completely free. Some fans, though, might be disappointed that they won’t get to see as much of the actor as they’d like to.

There are currently two clips up on the page, and they both appear to be from the movie. This clever marketing gimmick reveals something that Cena revealed to Stern during his interview. He doesn’t shy away from doing crazy things if it can help to advance his film career.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson burst onto the wrestling scene in the mid-90s and was a phenomenon by the decade’s end. Johnson’s fame was due to both his physical prowess and his incredible ability on the microphone. The wrestler grew famous during the notorious “Attitude Era,” and Johnson was willing to push the envelope to increase his fame.

Movie studios came calling for The Rock, but his early roles were more about how big and strong he looked and ignored his ability to connect with an audience. He took the roles anyway, acting in movies like The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King and Be Cool.

Like Dwayne Johnson, Dave Bautista began his career as an actor by playing roles that required him to look big and strong and say very little. Bautista even appeared in the direct-to-video film The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption.

Things changed when the wrestler was awarded the role of Drax the Destroyer in the 2014 movie Guardians of the Galaxy. Bautista did play a very muscled-up alien, but the role also allowed him to show off his comedic chops, and Drax became a beloved figure.

In addition to numerous performances in the Marvel Universe, Bautista starred in Knives Out: The Glass Onion and in M. Night Shyamalan’s A Knock at the Cabin. The former wrestler has discussed how seriously he takes the craft, and he keeps working to become a better performer. Now an in-demand actor, Dave Bautista will soon appear in Dune: Part Two, The Killer’s Game and The Last Showgirl.
