Scarlett Johansson Sat In Silence After Her Film Was Booed At The Venice Film Festival

Highlights

  • Scarlett Johansson’s film “Under the Skin” was booed at its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, almost bringing her to tears.
  • Despite the negative reaction, the film eventually gained a cult following and received positive reviews.
  • Johansson took a major risk by agreeing to a nude scene in the film, but ultimately felt unsettled by the mixed audience reaction to her performance.

Throughout her career, Scarlett Johansson has taken on some questionable films. In fact, she was deemed as embarrassingly over-qualified for The Perfect Score, and some feared the film could’ve ruined her career.

Nonetheless, she enjoyed stellar success, but wasn’t immune to negative reactions. Heck, even the likes of Jennifer Aniston faced boos at the Life of Crime premiere.

As for Johansson, thinks went completely south at the screening of Under The Skin. We’re going to take a closer look at what went wrong during the premiere, and why the actress was almost in tears after the film’s debut.

Scarlett Johansson Was Almost In Tears After ‘Under The Skin’ Received Boos At The Venice Film Festival

The Sci-fi /drama Under the Skin got its release in 2013. Although the Johnathan Glazer film was booed after its initial screening, it didn’t deter its eventual release. The film still managed to make a couple of millions at the box office ($7.2 million) while reviews weren’t bad either, with Rotten Tomatoes rating the film with an 84% approval rating. It would gain a cult following in the years after its release.

However, things weren’t looking so promising at the start as Scarlett Johansson was almost in tears after the film was booed at the Venice Film Festival. Director Alberto Barbera called it the worst premiere he had ever been to.

“One of the worst screenings I’ve attended. It was the only time the audience booed a film,” he explained. “Scarlett was almost in tears.”

Despite the reaction, Barbera still had hopes that the film could be salvaged, “I tried to say to her: ‘Don’t worry, in time the film will be recognised.’ And that’s exactly what happened,” he said. “It’s now a cult movie.”

As for Scarlett Johansson, she wasn’t exactly sure how to feel once the film came to an end.

“When the lights came up… there was this sound of people cheering and booing at the same time, but with equal gusto,” she said. “I didn’t know how to react to it. I think I was just… I wouldn’t say disturbed but I was sort of shocked.”

The actress might’ve felt extra upset given that she took a major risk taking on the film.

Scarlett Johansson Took A Major Risk In Under The Skin Agreeing To A Fully Nude Scene

The film was that much more significant for Scarlett given that it was the first time she took on a role with a fully nude scene. Johansson opened up about her first fully nude role, explaining that she only agreed to it given that it made sense for her character in the film.

Nonetheless, the actress revealed that it was a stressful situation.

“The first time I saw it I was terrified, partly because of things like the nudity,” Johansson said. “I didn’t know how that was going to be used. I didn’t know how naked my performance would be figuratively.”

Despite the fact that she agreed to it, the actress also thought about the negative consequences of taking on such a scene.

“You assume its going to be a screenshot for someone. You kind of have to weigh the value of the risk that you’re taking.”

It all turned out to be just fine for the actress as the film was able to bounce back in a major way following its disastrous start at the Venice Film Festival.

Scarlett Johansson Didn’t Like The Way She Was Being Groomed By Hollywood Early On

Looking back at her career in Hollywood, Johansson revealed that she was being groomed in a certain way early on. The goal was to make her a bombshell-type of actor.

The actress revealed with People, “I was kind of being groomed, in a way, to be this what you call a bombshell-type of actor. I kind of became like an ingénue, sort of, and I just think that’s part of — young girls like that are really objectified, and that’s just a fact. I did Lost in Translation and Girl With the Pearl Earring and by that point, I was 18, 19, and I was coming into my own womanhood and learning my own desirability and sexuality.”

She continues, “I think it was because of that trajectory I had been sort of launched towards — I really got stuck,” she said.

Scarlett would go on to reveal that she easily could’ve settled with these circumstances given her success in Hollywood. However, that just wasn’t in her nature.

“It would be easy to sit across from someone in that situation and go, ‘This is working, why change it?’ But for that kind of bombshell, you know, that burns bright and quick and then it’s done and you don’t have opportunity beyond that.”

Clearly, Johansson has done a great job listening to her instincts throughout her career.
