Fans Slam Bradley Cooper After He Revealed One Scene In Maestro Took Him Six Years To Train For

Highlights

  • Bradley Cooper spent six years training for a single scene in Maestro, which some fans found excessive.
  • While some fans were impressed by Cooper’s dedication, others thought it was ridiculous to spend so much time on one scene.
  • The film itself has been criticized as Oscar bait, and Cooper lost out on the Golden Globe for Best Actor to Cillian Murphy.

Transforming into a character can look many different ways, and some stars, like Daniel Day-Lewis, are known for disappearing into their roles. It comes at a heavy price, but it can help a performer get the most of their time on screen.

MCU mainstay, Bradley Cooper, utilized a physical transformation for his role in Maestro, but the star revealed that he underwent an extensive amount of training, too.

Fans have been impressed with the way others have trained for roles, but once they learned about Cooper’s tactics, some felt that the star simply did way too much.

Bradley Cooper Spent 6 Years Training For A Single Scene In Maestro, And Fans Weren’t Having It

Sometimes, actors just take things too far from the public’s point of view.

Take Bradley Cooper’s turn as Leonard Bernstein in his biopic, Maestro, for example. Cooper underwent a physical transformation that caused a wave of controversy, but the actor didn’t stop there. Instead, he poured literal years worth of work into a single scene in the film.

“Speaking at a recent Los Angeles screening for the film in a conversation moderated by “Hamilton” Tony-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, Cooper revealed that he spent a whopping six years learning how to conduct just over six minutes of music in the style of Bernstein himself so he could record a crucial scene in “Maestro” live on set,” Variety reported.

Cooper himself opened up about the scene, talking about getting it right while under pressure.

“That scene I was so worried about because we did it live. That was the London Symphony Orchestra. I was recorded live. I had to conduct them. And I spent six years learning how to conduct six minutes and 21 seconds of music,” he said.

Let’s unpack this for a second, because it’s a lot.

It’s no secret that actors will go through great lengths to get the most out of their time on screen, but over half a decade of training for a single scene is bananas.

While some have been impressed by that fact, others were quick to illustrate

“The whole thing about him spending 6 years learning to conduct is actually ridiculous. It takes high schoolers an afternoon to learn how to conduct,” one Reddit user stated.

Another user had a funnier take.

“This dude is going to be at actor’s round tables waving his hands around rhythmically as he talks, claiming he went too deep and is now stuck in conductor mode,” they wrote.

Now, to be fair to Cooper, he received heaps of praise for his performance, but some fans still can’t wrap their heads around the preparation that went into it.

The film itself has also taken some heat for what many have dubbed Oscar bait.

Many People Felt That The Movie Was Strictly Oscar Bait

For the unfamiliar, the term Oscar-bait means that a film was made strictly with the intention of gaining attention during the awards season.

In one Reddit thread, a user said, “Maestro has to be the biggest Oscar bait of all time. Like the whole film you are just left wondering who Leonard Bernstein really was. It is just a shame because he seemed like a really interesting dude but I honestly learned nothing about him though this movie.”

Again, this isn’t factual information, but it seems like many people have drawn similar conclusions.

Unfortunately, Cooper was already denied a major award recently.

He Lost Out On Best Actor To Cillian Murphy At The Golden Globes

At the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, Bradley Cooper found himself up for best actor, but ultimately, Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy took home the prestigious hardware.

“I want to thank Chris and Emma [Thomas] for having the faith in me for 20 years. Thanks so much. One of the most beautiful and vulnerable things about being an actor is that you can’t do it on your own, really. We had the most incredible ensemble cast in this movie. It was magic and some of them are here today. Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Gary Oldman. Thank you for carrying me and holding me through this movie,” Murphy said as part of his acceptance speech.

Not only did Murphy take home the big prize that night, but many see Murphy as the clear front-runner for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
