Ricky Gervais Revealed He Would Have Made Fun Of Jada Pinkett’s “Boyfriend”

Following the Oscar slap, Ricky Gervais was among the names that trended, especially given his harsh jokes in the past in regards to celebs over the years. Gervais gave his take on the situation, calling the joke, “the lamest sweetest joke.”

He said, “That joke that Will Smith slapped someone for was the lamest, sweetest joke in the world. No disrespect to Chris Rock, it wasn’t an insult. And she rolled her eyes and that’s it.”

Gervais went on to admit that his name was all over the headlines as soon as the incident took place.

“I was trending for two days and I wasn’t even there. And I had a gig that night, a new material night. So I had to acknowledge it. And I walked out on stage, ‘I’ve got no Will Smith material.’ And it got a big laugh, just because they were thinking it.”

He continues, “It was trending on Twitter ‘What would happen if Ricky was hosting it?’ And I said ‘Nothing because I wouldn’t have made about his wife’s hair.”

As for what Gervais would have said instead, the comedian would’ve gone after someone else instead.

“I’d have made a joke about her boyfriend.’ And then that trended and made the papers.”

Another fan wrote, “Ricky has the absolute best take on the whole situation. You definitely can tell Will didn’t want to slap him but he was already up there so he just committed to it.”

Gervais has said in the past that the way an actor takes a joke is what makes it so great. Gervais has praised the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio for laughing in the past at the jokes made at the actor’s expense, especially for dating younger women. In Gervais’ view, DiCaprio had the perfect reaction.

“When Leonardo DiCaprio laughed, people loved him for it. I think people who laugh at a joke, they get a round of applause because people go, ‘Oh that’s good, they can take it,’ we don’t want people to be above it.”

The same hasn’t held true for Gervais with other celebs, particularly Gibson, and Tom Hanks…
