Manhunt underway after a Sydney house was firebombed putting the occupant in hospital with severe injuries

A firebomb attack on a suburban Sydney residence has left the homeowner in a critical condition in hospital as two suspects remain on the run.

Police are on the hunt for two men they believe poured petrol onto the front of the home on Chelsea Drive in Canley Heights, in the city’s west, at 5:45am on Saturday.

The sole occupant of the home, a 68-year-old man, was saved by a neighbour who pulled him from the blaze as firefighters arrived.

He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition with smoke inhalation and significant burns but is now in a serious but stable condition.

Investigators have not revealed any leads on a motive for the attack.

Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Chris Hughes said his crew ‘found that the fire was rapid’ and NSW Police Acting Inspector David McInerney said it was suspicious.

‘There’s a possibility that there’s several people involved or more than one,’ Acting Inspector McInerney told reporters.

‘A man in his 60s has had significant burns to his arms and limbs. It’s extremely dangerous and its a highly volatile situation.

‘At this stage we’re appealing to the public if they’ve got any dashcam footage or they have any CCTV footage to contact police.’

Accelerant detections dogs have since combed over the area and police confirmed two men doused the front of the home with jerrycans filled with petrol.

Inspector Hughes believed that the fire was lit in ‘multiple sites’ by the two men.

The elderly female neighbour who pulled the man from the blaze told 9News that she opened his door to find the entire house on fire.

His workmate arrived shortly after to pick the man up for work and was shocked to find out what had happened.

The two suspects remain on the run.

Anyone with dashcam footage or information is asked to contact police.
