Health officials have warned against a salmonella outbreak linked to dry dog and cat food.

On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a food safety alert after seven cases of salmonella, including one hospitalization, were recorded in seven states.

Six out of the seven infections were in infants under one year old.

The infections were linked to Victor brand Hi-Pro Plus dry dog food, manufactured by Mid America Pet Food in Mount Pleasant, Texas. These foods were shipped nationwide.

Several dog and cat food varieties from the brands Eagle Mountain, Wayne Feeds, and Member’s Mark are also under recall.

These foods were shipped nationwide. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), affected states that reported illnesses were: Minnesota, California, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, and Hawaii

The foods all had the ‘Best Buy’ date before October 31, 2024.

According to the CDC alert, infected people picked up the disease by touching contaminated dog food, touching dog bowels containing the food, or touching the feces or saliva of dogs that were fed the food.

Salmonella bacteria are passed from feces of people or animals, and symptoms of an infection usually begin between six hours and six days after exposure. They typically resolve within another four to seven days without requiring medical intervention.

Some people have no symptoms. However, the illness can sometimes be more severe and lead to hospitalization.

People with pre-existing medical conditions, weakened immune systems, children under 12 months old, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to serious side effects – or even death.

In rare circumstances, a salmonella infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and causing more severe illness such as infections in the arteries, endocarditis (inflammation of the heart valve) and arthritis.

Salmonella infects more than 1.3 million people every year, leading to 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths annually

Foods contaminated with salmonella are almost always animal in origin, such as eggs. The bacteria can also lurk in unbaked or uncooked flour used to make dough or batter.

The FDA reported that pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic, have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.

The CDC recommends throwing away recalled pet food in a sealed trash bag to avoid wildlife becoming infected with salmonella. The agency also said to clean surfaces like pet bowls.
