The concierge on the Palazzo seems me up and down. ‘Are you prepared?’ he says. Well, sure, as prepared as I’ll ever be for per week of meals deprivation, no alcohol; mountain climbing, health and yoga and, phew, massages, set within the Apennine mountains east of Rome, surrounding the spa city, Fiuggi.
Since the early 14th century, royalty, popes and Renaissance masters — amongst them Michelangelo — have come to unwind on this forested valley famed for its therapeutic waters.
The Ranch has simply opened its first European outpost on the Palazzo Fiuggi, following on the gilded heels of its well-known retreat in Malibu, California, fashionable with the likes of Michelle Obama and Nicole Kidman.
I’m right here partly due to a breast most cancers disaster of my very own, and really feel prepared for a problem and well being enhance. But goodness me, the foundations are strict. All friends should signal a privateness coverage and are inspired to make dramatic modifications in weight loss program and way of life for a month previous to arrival.

Set up in 2010, The Ranch founders, Alex and Sue Glasscock, observed their pals have been getting heavier and extra torpid. So they determined to create a programme themselves, employed a vegan chef and developed a highly-structured format. Broadly, The Ranch philosophy is {that a} gluten-free, plant-based weight loss program will cut back irritation and danger of illness.
Our introductory speak by the charming, whippet-fit Italian workers offers me an opportunity to look at our group of 12, aged 20-60, all high-flying professionals who’ve flown in from New York, LA, and London.
Like prize fighters, we’re weighed in and given an ECG coronary heart and blood check, have our waist and hip measurements taken, and endure an hour’s health class adopted by a vegan natural dinner.

We are then given some key Ranch mantras to chew on: relinquish accountability; obtain all that you would be able to; concentrate on you; get just a little soiled; enable consciousness; be within the current second. I start to assume that Gwyneth Paltrow may seem. That evening, I don’t sleep soundly, ready for the 5.30am wake-up name and questioning how I’ll survive on 1,400 vegan energy a day for per week.
We dutifully stretch at 6am, eat a small granola-type breakfast (no yoghurt) and are off mountain climbing by 7am.
When the going is especially steep and rocky, voices crackle encouragement over the walkie-talkies all of us carry in our day packs for security. ‘We’ve received this, Ranchers,’ they are saying, and ‘Go Us.’ Our group dynamics play out: the tall, enthusiastic social media influencer leads the cost, the graceful banker concurs, the highly effective govt board girl lastly relaxes and chats to me about her youngsters, and the insurance coverage CEO chortles his dream order for a cappuccino on the prime.

Driving again from the four-hour walks, I typically really feel dizzy from the dearth of meals and exertion. On day 5, when a bowl of quinoa and carrot brings tears to my eyes, The Ranch staff takes pity on me and brings a bowl of breakfast granola.
Yet all of us have climbed private mountains. My most cancers mind fog clears, braveness returns, a post-pandemic insecurity about journey and socialising is dusted off. By the tip of the week, one member of our group has misplaced a stupendous 17lb, whereas most of us have misplaced from 3 to 6lb.
More essential, all of us really feel energised and grateful for such an uncommon and regimented break from our working lives.
