Celtic defender Alexandro Bernabei has been charged by police over a ‘road traffic offence’ in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 21-year-old Argentine moved to the Scottish champions from Lanus this summer for a fee of £3.75million on a five-year deal.

Yet to make a competitive appearance for the Parkhead side, the left-back was an unused substitute in Sunday’s 5-0 win over Kilmarnock.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘On Monday, 15 August, 2022, a 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with a road traffic offence which took place in Glasgow City Centre. He has been released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.’

Bernabei was one of a number of permanent signings made this summer as competition for Scotland international Greg Taylor.

Bernabei became the first-ever Argentine to join the Scottish side earlier this summer and was expected to eventually replace Taylor long-term.

‘I’m very happy to be here and I feel grateful to the club for giving me this opportunity,’ he told Celtic TV after joining.

‘I feel proud to be playing in Europe because it was one of my dreams and I’m excited to train with and play with my new team-mates.

‘The stadium is just incredible. The people, the club, team-mates, and the coaching staff are all incredible.

‘I’m very excited and happy and I can’t wait to be playing in the Champions League. I’ve heard that the people are crazy, so I can’t wait to sense that feeling and emotion in Celtic Park.’

Bernabei was one of a number of signings this summer, as boss Ange Postecoglou also snapped up the likes of Aaron Mooy, Benji Siegrist and Moritz Jenz.

He also completed permanent deals for Cameron Carter-Vickers, Jota and Daizen Maeda this summer.
