Doug Williams grew to become the primary Black quarterback to win a hoop when he received Super Bowl XXVII with the Washington Redskins in 1988 over the Denver Broncos.

Williams stated he had “tears of pleasure in my eye,” a sense he had when Barack Obama was elected president and when Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith confronted off in Super Bowl XLI.
“Things like that give me pleasure, give me cheer that make me suppose we made some steps. We have made just a few steps,” he stated, “however there’s a variety of steps we have not made.

“There’s a variety of firsts once you speak about African Americans. You go all the way in which to Wilma Rudolph, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, Michael Jordan. You obtained so many Black individuals — ladies and men — which have executed one thing first that do not get the popularity. … We’re speaking about one thing that occurred in America that must be celebrated on a regular basis.”
