England have launched their kits for the upcoming World Cup and in the process have announced that they have joined the OneLove campaign.
The campaign was launched in the Netherlands last year to stand up for inclusion and diversity in football, and against discrimination.
The logo and the name of the campaign was shown on Georginio Wijndalum’s captain’s armband throughout Euro 2020 as well as on a number of billboards at the Johan Cruijff Arena, while it was also present in Eredivisie matches.
England have now announced that they’ll join the campaign along with Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales for the World Cup in Qatar.
“I am honoured to join my fellow national team captains in supporting the important OneLove campaign,” said England captain Harry Kane.
“As captains we may all be competing against each other on the pitch, but we stand together against all forms of discrimination. This is even more relevant at a time when division is common in society.
“Wearing the armband together on behalf of our teams will send a clear message when the world is watching.”
In the same announcement, the FA also called for migrant workers who were injured or killed in Qatar while working on the construction of the stadiums to be compensated.
“Our position is that any injury or death related to any construction project should be compensated and the World Cup is no different. Equally, we are supportive of the concept of a Migrant Workers’ Centre, and have lobbied FIFA for an urgent update on progress,” the governing body said.
“After the implementation of progressive legislation to give workers rights, the concept of a centre is to ensure that this legislation is implemented, and that there is awareness of the new labour laws and legal support where required.”
