Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher criticise Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez after red card on Anfield debut

‘He’s properly gone for Andersen… it’s a moment of MADNESS’: Gary Neville slams Darwin Nunez after his red card for HEADBUTTING Palace defender… as Jamie Carragher says the £85m man ‘let his team and the fans down’ on his Anfield debut

  • Darwin Nunez made his Anfield debut for Liverpool against Crystal Palace
  • He was sent off shortly before the hour mark for head-butting Joachim Andersen
  • Gary Neville claimed it was a ‘moment of madness’ from the 23-year-old striker
  • Jamie Carragher said Nunez ‘let his team and the fans down’ with his actions

Gary Neville was left stunned by Darwin Nunez‘s red card during Liverpool‘s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday night after the Uruguayan forward was given his marching orders for head-butting Joachim Andersen.

Wilfried Zaha gave Palace the lead against the run of play in the first half, before Luis Diaz eventually pulled Liverpool late on with a fine solo goal.

However, it was Nunez’s tangle with Andersen on his Anfield debut just minutes before Diaz’s leveller that was the main talking point from the evening.

Neville admitted he could not defend Nunez’s actions, and claimed the 23-year-old would be a big miss when Liverpool travel to Manchester United next week.

‘The story tonight is Nunez, not only the first head-butt but to then go again. He’s properly gone for Andersen,’ Neville said on Monday Night Football.

‘There has been no history of that at Benfica, he didn’t get sent off there. That’s the stupidity tonight. It will be a steep learning curve for him.

‘It’s a moment of madness, isn’t it? He’s combative. It’s a proper butt to the underside of the nose — Andersen will be feeling that. Nunez will learn from that but Liverpool will miss him next week.

Neville was asked why Nunez may have lost his cool during the incident with Andersen.

The former United defender was unable to offer an explanation, but conceded that he had been in a similar situation on a couple of occasions during his playing days.

‘We genuinely don’t know why we react. We have no idea why we do what we do, we just go off. Honestly, I kicked a ball at a fan at Everton, did the same against Steve McManaman. You [Jamie Carragher] did mad things too, threw a coin into the crowd,’ Neville added.

Tussles off the ball between forwards and defenders are common place in football, but Carragher was shocked that Nunez was not more subtle, and instead opted to head-butt Andersen right in front of the referee.

‘I couldn’t believe he was remonstrating to the referee. Andersen’s not doing anything — he’s just in a normal centre-back position.

‘Look at Nunez, looking straight at the referee [beforehand] and complaining. It’s not a foul [on Nunez]. I cannot believe he possibly thinks he’s going to get away with that. The referee was looking straight at it; he could not have had a better view.

‘He’s trying to argue he hasn’t done anything, trying to convince his team-mates and the crowd. As he walks away, he’s realising what he’s done. He’ll be devastated in the dressing room: he’s let his team and the fans down,’ Carragher said.

Liverpool did manage to get back on level terms after Nunez’s dismissal, but they were held to a second consecutive draw, leaving them four points adrift of leaders Manchester City after just two matches.
