‘The award is officially FINISHED’: Furious Lionel Messi fans take aim at France Football for ‘joke’ decision to snub PSG star from 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist… but others revel in fact Argentine star’s 18-year run is over

  • Lionel Messi fans took to Twitter to vent their fury after his Ballon d’Or snub
  • The seven-time winner was not included in the 30-man shortlist for the award
  • He managed 37 goals and assists in 45 games and won two trophies last season
  • The Argentine’s great rival Cristiano Ronaldo has made the list at the age of 38
  • Karim Benzema is favourite to win after a Champions League and LaLiga double
  • Brazilian forward Neymar joins his team-mate Messi in not being nominated

Lionel Messi fans have taken to social media to protest the Argentine great’s Ballon d’Or snub after it was revealed he was not part of a 30-man shortlist for the award.

Supporters of the 35-year-old PSG forward have declared the award ‘finished’ in reaction to the news, with many shocked that he has missed out despite 14 goals and 16 assists in 36 games for the Parisians in all competitions.

Messi, who has won the award a record seven times, has not been included in the initial list for the first time since 2005 – but his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo has at the age of 37 despite not winning any silverware.

The majority of fans on Twitter were amazed that the ever-present Messi was omitted, and many have ridiculed the list with one fan writing: ‘Messi wasn’t nominated lmfaoooo wtf.’

Another questioned the future of the Ballon d’Or by adding: ‘Robbery of joke award no longer credible.’

A third fan agreed, saying: ‘No excuse needed. Not giving the best striker award and Messi not in top 30 just proved what majority professional players and we were claiming. Straight up robbery.’

Many Twitter fans are calling France Football's decision a 'joke' and questioned the integrity of the award after the Argentine's snub

And a fourth mocked the shortlist by writing: ‘Wtf man they can include ronaldo but not messi????? This is f**kin robbery this utter disrespect.’

Twitter user @GT_MessiFC added: ‘If Messi and Neymar is not in the Ballon d’Or nominees the award is officially finished.’

But not all fans on Twitter have leapt to the defence of arguably the greatest player of all time, with many relishing in his misfortunes.

Unsurprisingly the social media platform has been filled with comparisons to Portugal’s legendary five-time winner Ronaldo, given the long-standing rivalry the two shared on the pitch.

Twitter user @cristixnoera wrote: ‘Lionel Messi failing to make the Ballon d’Or Top 30 at 35, while Cristiano Ronaldo makes it at 37 years of age playing for the worst Manchester United side in ages. Extraordinary. Timeless. Special,’ followed by a goat emoji.

But the Manchester United forward is not the only player fans have compared Messi to, with one fan writing: ‘Sebastian Haller nominated for Ballon D’or but not Messi or Neymar, might have to choose a new sport to follow.’

Another added: ‘Nunez nominated but Messi not nominated? Wtf.’

One fan was confident though that this snub would not be the end of Messi, simply stating: ‘Revenge tour coming we cool.’

And The 35-year-old is not the only high-profile absentee from the list and was joined by PSG team-mate and Brazil talisman Neymar, with Champions League and LaLiga winner and top-scorer Karim Benzema favourite for the award.
