The Red Devils also registered an interest in signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer but a deal for the 25-year-old is unlikely to take place.
United were pushing to acquire the Dutch midfielder in a deal worth around £70million as Ten Hag was eager to reunite with his former player after their successful time together at Ajax.
However, De Jong was reluctant to join the Red Devils because of the lack of Champions League football this season and it now appears that United’s offer for the midfielder has expired.

Manchester United have not been tempted to sign Antoine Griezmann this summer either
Additionally, United have not been tempted to sign Antoine Griezmann and a swap deal for Cristiano Ronaldo has not been discussed at this stage.
However, talks are ongoing over whether the Portuguese striker will remain a part of Manchester United’s plans going forwards.
Meanwhile, United could be in with a shot of landing Alvaro Morata this summer as Atletico still need to sell players to balance out their books.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone has said he would like the 29-year-old to stay at the club for the 2022-23 campaign.
The Atletico boss said: ‘I am not the owner of the club, I’m the coach, today he is doing well, he works with great humility and we hope he will continue with us’.
While Morata said: ‘I really want to play here. I’m excited to be here, as always, I can only work and run for the team in every game.’
