Man Utd have spent record £60m firing managers since Sir Alex Ferguson left

Manchester United have spent a Premier League-high £60m firing managers since Sir Alex Ferguson left at the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

Since then, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick have all tried and failed to fill the void left by the Scot.

Due to that failure, all five were relieved of their duties before their respective contracts came to an end, and that has cost the club a pretty penny.

Having studied financial accounts, The Athletic have calculated that a total of £60m has been spent on providing the above managers with compensation.

Specifically, £4.9m was paid to Moyes, £8.4m was paid to Louis van Gaal and his staff, and it cost a whopping £19.6m to fire Mourinho and his cohort.

Listen now to 90min’s Manchester United podcast, The Promised Land, with Scott Saunders & Rob Blanchette. In the latest episode they discuss the Europa League win over Omonia and look ahead to the Everton game in the Premier League.

The above amounts, plus the severance packages given to Solskjaer and Rangnick, mean that Man Utd have spent more than any other Premier League club on firing managers since Ferguson left. The Athletic add that Chelsea have spent £38.8m doing so, Arsenal £27.9m and Liverpool £15.7m.

However, what Chelsea spent on firing Frank Lampard is unclear and thus not included in their total, nor is the cost of sacking Thomas Tuchel. Given that, it’s possible that Chelsea have in fact paid more than Man Utd.

The figures for Manchester City and Tottenham are also unclear. Given that Manuel Pellegrini is the only manager to have left Man City in this time period, their total is unlikely to be high, but Spurs’ could well be given six managers have come and gone there since Ferguson retired.
