Arsenal fixtures: Next six games after narrow Everton win

Arsenal kept pace with the Premier League’s chasing pack behind Manchester City courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners eked out their first victory at Goodison Park in six years but once again lacked the fluency and ruthlessness that they enjoyed for so much of the previous campaign.

An ominous fixture list – which includes the return of Champions League football, a north London derby and the visit of Manchester City – will not make it any easier for Mikel Arteta’s side to click into gear.

Here’s everything you need to know Arsenal’s upcoming schedule.

PSV Eindhoven may have lost their manager and star midfielder over the summer but there have been few signs of teething problems for last season’s Dutch Cup champions.

Peter Bosz has won seven of his eight matches in charge this term (D1), watching his new team score at least two goals in every game. The Gunners defeated PSV when they visited London in the Europa League last year but replicating that feat will not be straightforward.

The last time Tottenham Hotspur collected four wins and one draw from their first five games of a league season was back in 1965. Incidentally, Tottenham’s sixth match that year was also against Arsenal and ended in a 2-2 draw.

Spurs have not won a league game at the Emirates since 2010 but are revelling in the form inspired by new manager Ange Postecoglou.

Excessive rotation from Arteta cost Arsenal against Brighton in last year’s Carabao Cup, sending the Gunners home after just one game.

Arsenal have never lost consecutive third-round ties in the history of England’s secondary cup competition. Up against a wily Brentford team, Arteta can’t afford too many alterations if he wants to avoid an unwanted piece of history.

Gipuzkoa, the small Basque province in the north of Spain, is where Arteta and Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola both grew up.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery also hails from the same corner of Iberia, as did the recently departed Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Julen Lopetegui. Arteta and Iraola were even teammates on the same youth team, Antiguoko.

The last time Arsenal travelled to the coal fields of Lens for a European match, Arsene Wenger came away from a victory purring: “I never felt under threat too much because I thought we controlled the game.” Back in 2000, Wenger’s Arsenal had secured passage to the final of the UEFA Cup, the forerunner to the Europa League.

While the stakes aren’t quite as high for Arteta’s current vintage, he will be aiming for the same commanding nature of success.

A congested fixture list – further complicated by the passing of Queen Elizabeth II – ensured that Arsenal’s first league meeting with Manchester City last season was saved until February.

The Gunners have the chance to go up against the autumn iteration of the reigning champions this time around. Theoretically, that should be a weaker version of Pep Guardiola’s side but City have heartily undermined that received wisdom with an imperious start to the new campaign.
