Premier League fixtures today – your guide to Saturday’s games

Ah, it’s nice to be back, isn’t it?

The Premier League’s summer absence felt like a lifetime considering the ludicrous amount of football that was played last season, but normality resumed last Friday as treble winners resumed from where they left off on opening night.

It was business as usual for Manchester City on opening weekend, and it’s their upcoming home fixture which stands out among an impressive bunch in Saturday’s fixtures on Gameweek 2.

It’s west London Derby time at Craven Cottage!

The corresponding fixture was a cracker last season, with Fulham edging it 3-2 thanks to some Aleksandar Mitrovic heroics, but the Cottagers’ star striker may not be in the starting XI for Saturday’s bout given the questions surrounding his future.

Marco Silva’s side were mightily fortunate to win at Everton last weekend, with Bernd Leno’s outstanding performance ensuring Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s second half strike was enough to seal all three points. They’ll have to be improved on home soil if they’re to beat their superbly-drilled local rivals, who started their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

Liverpool FC v AFC Bournemouth - Premier League

It can’t get much worse for Bournemouth when they visit Anfield this weekend / Visionhaus/GettyImages

Well, surely it can’t get worse for Bournemouth on their next visit to Anfield.

Scott Parker’s Cherries were thumped 9-0 on Merseyside this time last year, and the south coast outfit looked for all many to return to the second tier. Gary O’Neil’s stellar work, however, ensured Bournemouth remained in the top flight, although they’ve opted to go in a different direction by appointing Andoni Iraola.

Their new dawn began with a 1-1 draw at West Ham and a mammoth away test awaits the new Spanish boss. While Liverpool likely won’t have a natural #6 in midfield on Saturday, Anfield remains a daunting ground to visit and the Reds are blessed with a supreme attacking force capable of overwhelming just about any side.

Former Bournemouth boss O’Neil has walked into a challenging situation at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the early signs at Old Trafford were overwhelmingly positive. They were mightily unfortunate not to walk away with something on Monday night.

This has the makings of a enthralling contest given the technical proficiency of both teams, although Wolves supporters will be pleading for a more efficient performance in the final third in their home opener.

They’ll need to be if they’re to overcome a brilliant Brighton & Hove Albion side who blitzed past Luton Town 4-1 last weekend.

Ange Postecoglou

For Tottenham Hotspur supporters, last Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Brentford felt like a victory. The Gtech is always a tough place to go, but Ange Postecoglou’s side acquitted themselves superbly as the Australian named four debutants in his starting XI.

The display was far from perfect, but it’s hard not to feel somewhat optimistic about Spurs this season despite the absence of Harry Kane. They’re going to be a brilliant watch, that’s for sure.

However, another tough test awaits on Saturday evening on Ange’s home debut as they welcome Manchester United to north London. United were poor in their win over Wolves, with Erik ten Hag leaving Monday night’s game with many more questions than answers about his side.

Tottenham vs Man Utd is an inviting teaser for Saturday’s main event, which will take place under the Etihad lights.

Often overlooked by many in the race for this season’s Champions League places, Newcastle United emerged as the most impressive performers on Matchday 1 as they thrashed Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 5-1 on Tyneside.

Their aggressive midfield purred and a tantalising encounter awaits with the champions this weekend. Man City are set to be without Kevin De Bruyne for the rest of the year, although they didn’t miss a beat on opening night as they waltzed past Burnley 3-0 at Turf Moor.

You won’t want to miss this.
