In a lot of ways, gameweek ten was a pretty standard week of Premier League football.
Erling Haaland scored a few goals, Manchester United descended into crisis (again), Chelsea lost (again), and the promoted clubs continued to be quite bad.
After all that, here’s 90min’s team of the gameweek:
GK: Bernd Leno (Fulham)
The fourth busiest goalkeeper in the Premier League this season was, as expected, very busy at the weekend during Fulham’s 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion.
Although beaten by the brilliance of Evan Ferguson, Bernd Leno made five fantastic saves to ensure that his team went back to west London with a point for their efforts.
RB: Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
Kyle Walker once again was at his brilliant best in Manchester City’s thumping 3-0 win over Manchester United.
The City captain simultaneously kept Marcus Rashford under lock and key by winning six duels, and provided some genuine quality in possession by completing 94% of his passes on the day. There’s very few defenders in the world better than Walker.
CB: Ethan Pinnock (Brentford)
Chances are putting a tenner on Ethan Pinnock being the first goalscorer in Chelsea vs. Brentford at the weekend would’ve made you a millionaire.
The 30-year-old popped up with just his fifth Premier League goal ever at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to set Brentford on their way to a famous win.
CB: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
Given a well deserved 9/10 in 90min’s player ratings on Sunday, Virgil van Dijk looked back to his very, very best in the win over Nottingham Forest.
The centre-back completed 104 passes, won 100% of his tackles, recovered the ball eight times and won eight duels. A mega performance all round.
LB: Marcus Tavernier (Bournemouth)
Following a truly terrible start to the season, Bournemouth badly needed some players to step up and get them a win over fellow strugglers Burnley at the weekend.
Marcus Tavernier was one of the players who did just that, racking up 10 ball recoveries and whopping 12 won duels in an all-action display out wide.
RM: Moussa Diaby (Aston Villa)
Whisper it: Moussa Diaby might be the best signing any Premier League team made during the summer.
The ex-Bayer Leverkusen man has been electric since joining Aston Villa, and he continued his fine form at the weekend with a goal and assist in the win over Luton Town.
CM: Joao Palhinha (Fulham)
Fulham would probably already be relegated (somehow) if Joao Palhinha had’ve got his move to Bayern Munich on deadline day.
The midfielder has been, by quite a distance, their best player over the last 12 months and he once again came up trumps for the Cottagers at the weekend; bagging a goal in the 1-1 draw with Brighton.
CM: Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool)
A tweet (or an X? We’re not sure what they’re called anymore) did the rounds recently insisting that Dominik Szoboszlai hasn’t played well for Liverpool because his goal contribution stats weren’t good.
It was very clear that, whoever tweeted (or X’d? Again still not sure) hasn’t seen one second of Szoboszlai playing for Liverpool. If they did, they’d know that the Hungarian has been utterly outstanding in his first 10 Premier League outings.
In his latest one he even bagged two assists to please all the stats merchants out there. Nice one.
LM: Phil Foden (Manchester City)
Back in the Manchester City starting lineup this season, and back to his best. Phil Foden once again came up trump for Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday, bagging a goal and generally giving Victor Lindelof nightmares on the right flank.
ST: Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal)
No Gabriel Jesus, no problem.
Eddie Nketiah put in a career best showing for Arsenal in the 5-0 win over Sheffield United, scoring his first ever Premier League hat-trick.
Check out his third goal if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a face melter.
ST: Erling Haaland (Manchester City)
Erling Haaland was expected to make mincemeat out of Manchester United’s central defensive partnership of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans, and he did exactly that on Sunday.
The Norwegian bullied the pair, scoring a brace in addition to setting up Foden’s goal in the comprehensive 3-0 win. 24 hours later he was named the Gerd Muller Trophy winner at the Ballon d’Or awards, finishing runner-up to Lionel Messi for the main prize. Not bad going.
