Premier League team of the week: Gameweek 20

With 10 games spanning across two calendar years, it’s fair to say that gameweek 20 of the 2023/24 Premier League season was a long one.

It was a fun one too though, as 35 goals were scored in the ten thrilling games of football.

Here’s 90min’s team of the week after yet another exciting gameweek of Premier League action.

GK: Alphonse Areola (West Ham United)

Despite conceding four goals, Martin Dubravka looked to have secured a place in the 90min team of the week thanks to his rather incredible ten saves at Anfield on Monday night.

And then Alphonse Areola came out on Tuesday and made eight stunning stops to keep a rampant Brighton & Hove Albion team at bay at the London Stadium.

Areola may be the best goalkeeper in the Premier League right now.

RB: Gonzalo Montiel (Nottingham Forest)

The 2022 World Cup winner has finally garnered some gametime at Nottingham Forest in recent weeks, and he’s certainly made the most of it.

Montiel followed up a solid outing in a win over Newcastle United with an exceptional one in the victory against Manchester United at the City Ground. His clever cut-back cross provided the assist for an all-important winning goal. Nice one.

CB: Craig Dawson (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Craig Dawson has made a rather surprising number of our team of the weeks throughout 2023/24.

This time, the veteran centre-back has made the cut thanks to a goal, 100% tackle completions, seven clearances and seven duels won in a fantastic performances against Everton at the weekend.

CB: Max Kilman (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Like his centre-back partner, Wolves defender Max Kilman was also bloody brilliant against Everton.

Kilman got among the goals to in the 3-0 victory, and won the ball back off the Toffees on ten occasions throughout the game at Molineux.

LB: Destiny Udogie (Tottenham Hotspur)

The best left-back in the Premier League?

At this point, it’s hard ot argue otherwise.

Destiny Udogie put in yet another stunning showing at the weekend for Tottenham Hotspur, performing well both in the defensive third as well as the attacking third for his side in a win over Bournemouth.

DM: Rodri (Manchester City)

Manchester City’s most important player was at his best once again over the weekend, providing a stunning opening goal in the win over Sheffield United.

With a fully fit Rodri in the team, expect Man City to go and win the Premier League title again in 2024. He’s that good.

CM: Ross Barkley (Luton Town)

Ross Barkley played like a man with a point to prove against his former club Chelsea on Saturday afternoon; and he did exactly that.

The 30-year-old was at his dynamic best in the 3-2 defeat, scoring a goal and generally causing havoc with his clever movement and incisive passing in behind the Blues defence.

CM: Curtis Jones (Liverpool)

“Special game. Special game from Curtis, to be honest: his high press, his counter-press,” said Jurgen Klopp about Curtis Jones’ performance against Newcastle United.

And judging by his goal, 91% pass completion rate, 100% dribble success and 100% tackles won during the New Year’s Day win, it’s easy to see why.

RW: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Monday night’s win over Newcastle United was a tale of two halves for Mohamed Salah.

In the first 45, the forward missed a penalty and largely struggled to make an impact on proceedings.

After a quick change of boots at half-time however, in the second half Salah was a completely different player.

His two goals and stunning assist were the reason Liverpool moved three points clear in the Premier League table.

CF: Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Chelsea have made a lot of buys during the Todd Boehly era, and Cole Palmer is the best of the lost.

Signed from Manchester City in the summer, Palmer has been an instant hit at Stamford Bridge and one of the very few bright spots in what’s been a rather disastrous season for the Blues.

He was once again the star of the show for Chelsea at the weekend, scoring two brilliant goals as well as bagging an assist in a 3-2 win over Luton Town. The sky’s the limit for the 21-year-old.

LW: Michael Olise (Crystal Palace)

Back to full fitness, and back to winning games for Crystal Palace.

Thanks to Olise’s brace, Roy Hodgson’s side secured their first win since late September at the weekend.
