Tony Blackburn fumes ‘this is beyond a joke’ as he slams ITV for cancelling Corrie

Tony Blackburn has hit out at ITV on social media today after yet more television has been cancelled in favour of football programming. Coronation Street will be the latest show to be pushed to the sidelines today, as regular viewing is forced to make way for the FA Cup.

Tonight’s match will see Nottingham Forrest face off against Manchester United, with kick-off happening at 7:45pm. Taking to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Tony complained that it didn’t feel fair for football coverage to take precedence across ITV and BBC One.

The Sounds of the Sixties host told his 119,200 followers: “This is now beyond a joke for all us Coronation Street fans. More football this evening on BBC and ITV which means no Corrie.

“Why can’t they put football on other channels and leave us Coronation street fans alone or put Coronation street on say ITV2 we will follow it anywhere !!!” he added frustratedly. (sic)

It comes after the BBC Radio 2 DJ first hit out at the UK’s major broadcasters yesterday, writing: “Unbelievable, BBC 1 and 2 also ITV all have football on at the same time. Great choice for all of us who don’t like football.

“Never mind there’s so much choice now it’s easy to avoid the ‘Beautiful Game’,” he added more optimistically.

Responding to Tony’s tweets, plenty of fans wrote in to agree with his stance on the coverage.

Julia commented: “Bad isn’t it ? Eastenders not in its usual slots either !” (sic)

Tony replied: And Corrie my favourite, why do they automatically move the shows we want to watch.

“Put football on other channels, there are enough of them,” he reiterated.

Brian added: “WELL SAID SIR @itvcorrie it’s kn Friday and Mkn..Wed.. frid..Next week as normal so we have now got kne episode to catch up on..” (sic)

Elaine agreed: “I totally agree , bloody football it’s ridiculous just gave on one channel not both then you got bloody football on sky as well.” (sic)

“I’m not a Corrie watcher but agree that the matches should be aired on other channeks – after all there are enough of them,” Gini chimed in. (sic)

Coronation Street will continue tomorrow at 8pm on ITV.
