World Series champ Sal Bando useless at 78 after battle with most cancers

Sal Bando, a four-time All-Star third baseman who gained three World Series titles with the Oakland Athletics, has died, his household stated in an announcement Saturday. He was 78.

Bando died in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, on Friday. He had been battling most cancers for the final 5 years, in accordance with his household.

“Sandy, Sal’s spouse of 54 years, and sons Sal Jr., Sonny and Stef, ship their like to household, associates and followers who mourn the lack of a humble and devoted man,” the household’s assertion learn.

Bando was a sixth-round draft choose of the Kansas City Athletics in 1965. He appeared in 11 video games in 1967 and bought his actual probability on the professionals in 1968 because the staff moved to Oakland. He performed in 1,468 profession video games with the Athletics and hit .255 with 192 residence runs and a .776 OPS.

He was an All-Star all 4 instances with the Athletics – in 1969 and three consecutive years from 1972 to 1974. In 1972, Bando was runner-up for the American League MVP Award behind teammate Vida Blue.

“We are heartbroken to study of the passing of Athletics Hall of Famer Sal Bando,” the A’s stated in an announcement. “’Captain Sal,’ as he was affectionately identified among the many A’s devoted, was a four-time All-Star and led the Club to a few consecutive World Series titles. Our deepest condolences are along with his household, associates, and followers.”

By 1977, Bando was on the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent the final 5 seasons of his profession with the Brewers. He hit .250 with 50 residence runs and a .717 OPS. He retired after the 1981 season.

“The Brewers mourn the passing of former third baseman, common supervisor and 2014 Wall of Honor inductee Sal Bando. Our heartfelt condolences exit to Sal’s household, associates and followers,” the Brewers stated.

Bando wouldn’t be too removed from the sport. He would change into the final supervisor of the Brewers from 1991 to 1999. He was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.
