Doug Emhoff’s Secret Service detail spotted blocking handicap parking

The Secret Service detail protecting Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff has been spotted blocking access to handicap-designated parking outside a Whole Foods in Los Angeles.

Emhoff was running errands on Wednesday in the Westside neighborhood of Brentwood when his two-vehicle motorcade blocked the accessible parking for about 20 minutes, a witness told DailyMail.com.

As Emhoff did some shopping at Whole Foods, the two black Chevrolet Suburbans bearing Department of Homeland Security plates parked diagonally across a parking space designated for people with disabilities, photos of the incident show.

Emhoff, who shares a home with Vice President Kamala Harris in Brentwood, was escorted by two agents as he left Whole Foods with his groceries.

Harris has been outspoken in her advocacy for people with disabilities, a stance seemingly in contrast with the scene that unfolded on Wednesday. A Secret Service spokesman declined to comment on the matter when reached by DailyMail.com

Outside the Whole Foods, the second gentleman told an onlooker that he was ‘doing good’ as he walked to the waiting motorcade and hopped in the back of one of the waiting SUVs.

One of the Secret Service vehicles briefly activated its lights and sirens as the SUVs zipped away from the Whole Foods parking lot.

On his errands trip on Wednesday, Emhoff was also seen picking up dry-cleaning from a shop not far from the Whole Foods.

Emhoff was casually dressed in a navy polo shirt, grey shorts, and white sneakers as he completed his errands.

It’s unclear whether Emhoff’s protective detail decided to block the accessible parking space at Whole Foods for security reasons.

A Secret Service spokesman told DailyMail.com in a statement: ‘Due to the need to maintain operational security, the U.S. Secret Service does not comment on the means or methods used to conduct our protective operations.’

Emhoff’s spouse Harris has been a vocal advocate for people with disabilities, and recently met with disability advocates at a round-table to discuss the potential impact of the Supreme Court’s ruling rolling back guarantees on abortion access.

At the event, Harris even took care to use inclusive language intended to help people with visual impairment, saying in her introduction: ‘I am Kamala Harris. My pronouns are “she” and “her.” I am a woman sitting at the table wearing a blue suit.’

Emhoff, who is the first second gentleman in US history, has been married to Harris since 2014, and has two children from his first marriage.

Emhoff built a successful career as a high-powered attorney and partner at DLA Piper, but stepped down from the firm when Harris took office to avoid conflicts of interest.

He is currently on the faculty of Georgetown University Law Center as a visiting professor, and has taught courses in entertainment law, his specialty.

As first gentleman, Emhoff has maintained a fairly low profile, but has undertaken a handful of diplomatic and goodwill duties, including leading a delegation to the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.

He also regularly joins First Lady Jill Biden in receiving foreign dignitaries, and frequently highlights the work of various charities and NGOs working on a wide range of issues.
